Acoustic / Electric Guitar Question!

I'm a novice at guitar; self taught. I've learned everything I know on an acoustic guitar so far. Also, my experience playing electric is zero.
Right now I enjoy playing folk rock and rock songs at about this level
This This Or this
As much as I like playing and singing some of my favorite songs on acoustic I have some other goals. I really would like to learn most of System of a Down's collection as well as some other metal / heavier rock songs. (pantera, in flames, atreyu) Should I stick it out with the acoustic guitar or would I be better off trying to learn more complicated material on a cheap electric with baby size amp?

I would definitely recommend picking up an electric. It's fun as fuck!

The nice thing about frequently playing on an acoustic is being able to hammer stuff out when you move to an electric. You're used to pressing a bit harder on an acoustic, its good training.
Get a cheap electric, find a used amp, and if you can afford it get some nice headphones. I have a line 6 spider amp i bought over 6 years ago still works great. I bought it used for somewhere around 50 bucks, WELL WORTH IT. It has plenty of basic cool effects to fuck around with. Oh and its plenty loud. Slap on some ear-cup headphones and get lost for hours.

I'll probably pick up a cheap guitar at a local store but as for an amp what is there to consider? Amps, effects, brand?
Also, will a set of nice regular headphones fit into an amp?

Im telling you man, line 6 amps are where its at. Cheap reliable, cool settings to mess with. Mine has a few settings- clean, recto, blues, twang, crunch, insane(distortion),a ping pong effect which is pretty cool.
The newer ones have built in tuners and a mp3 hook up. For 80 bucks new you cant beat it http://www.google.com/products/catalog?hl=en&safe=off&rlz=1C1CHNY_enUS410US410&biw=1024&bih=677&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.&q=line+6+amp&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=15679571534412169761&sa=X&ei=Fd_jTd7UI-GJ0QGB1OSJCg&ved=0CIgBEPMCMAQ
Go to guitar center and get a used one, or floor model for cheap.
Youd have to get an adapter to use regular head phones on your amp. Im telling you though the ear-cup studio style ones are where its at.

I don't think you should get super cheap electric gear if you're not a total guitar newb and are fairly sure you'll use it for awhile.... With amplified gear - you get what you pay for and most (new) amps under 200~ sound like shit. Line 6's included in my opinion Though I do like the tube version of the Line 6 Vyper - its not insanely expensive, has USB out for recording and an insane amount of pre-sets but their other models (notably spider III or II) sound way too digital to me. But, I tend more towards Vox's practice amp line... VT-30 or 50 or something, they sound beautiful
And for starter guitars I'd look at either epiphones or cheaper schecters... Fender/squires are not as good for your buck and their production quality varies insanely.

Sounds like shit how? Be more specific. My old one sounds great. This guy sounds like he just wants something to fuck around at home with. Look up reviews for line 6 amps, you wont find too many bad ones. Line 6 gives you the best bang for your buck. I have a few friends with inexpensive line 6 amps, and they have nothing but good things to say. As guitars go, epiphones are good, and squires are decent(played some shitty ones, played some nice ones)
OP- Id recommend not paying too much attention to guitar brand names and pick something out thats cheap and has a nice feel to it/plays good. Shit i pulled a guitar out of the garbage, restrung it fixed it up a little and it plays great. I saw the neck sticking out of the garbage can and was pleasantly surprised to find an intact body. I named it Oscar after oscar the grouch. Who the fuck throws out a guitar?

Hell you can get a Mexican strat for 200 at guitar center, if not as good or better than American made..

On what grounds do you say a Mexi strat is as good or better than an American? Sorry dude, that's bullshit. They're not always much worse, but they are DEFINITELY not as nice in any way, shape or form.
I just recently picked up a really, really nice '96 American Strat Plus Deluxe, with the LSR roller nut, Lace Sensor Gold pups, locking tuners, rosewood fretboard and perloid pickguard for $800 bucks. It is by far nicer than any Mexi strat I've ever seen/played.

Usually either they have terrible distortion, sound too digital, have poorly constructed circuits, or just a bad signal to noise ratio. Its all opinion though, and I just never liked line 6 tones
And I'm biased against strats as well cause I never liked their pickups, 21 frets and often cheap wood/construction... a schecter of comparable pricing to just about any strat model will get you much more guitar... 600$ schecters have EMG 81/85's, are 1 piece guitars, made of ebony and mahogany, string through with Grover tuners and incredibly sexy finishes
Guess it just depends if you want to play for the same price this:
 or this:

It's not only about the wood. USA Strats have nicer pickups, higher quality factory work, as well as nicer tuners.

Playing acoustic a lot just makes playing electric gravy. You play faster, smoother and more naturally when you pick up a properly setup electric because your hands are strong like bull.

I have a Mexi strat but the American ones I've tried have played nicer.
This could have a lot to do with how I had it set up though,I had the bridge flattened with the 5 springs in it. Since,I've taken out two springs and raised the bridge. It plays a lot nicer now. More how it should play.

I had a tex-mex when they first came out. I added a pearl pick guard and it was sweet as hell. Wish I still had it

I have to agree with Twighead here. I've known several people who bought Line 6 amps and all of them have told me they wish they bought something else.
I also wouldn't recommend buying the cheapest guitar you can find. You don't have to spend very much money, but I would spend some time in the store playing different guitars and see what feels nice to you. The cheap starter guitars you get for $130 are something I tell most everyone to avoid.
