Is this shiitake block ready to be fruited?
    #14536104 - 05/30/11 01:41 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

I have three shiitake blocks that were made on 4/8.. They all kind of look like this one- not completely barked over, but mostly..  The below pics are all four sides of one of the bags.. Is it ready to be stripped and fruited? or do I still need to wait a few more weeks?

I've got some that I made in early MARCH, and they aren't ready yet.  Let it brown completely before taking it out of the bag, and you'll get a lot more fruits on the first flush.  I've gotten fruits from a block like that... but just one or two here and there.  I recently opened a fully browned one, put it outside for 4 days (to dry and to cold shock), and now it's got tons of shitake coming on.  But I know it's tough to wait that long, so your call.  I had shitake in some fried rice that my wife made tonight... I love how fresh shitake tastes in that.  My wife is into cooking (huge CHOPPED fan and all that), so she loves my hobby.  Good luck.

I like mine a little more blistered and brown.  The first picture looks about ready if the entire block looks like that but the rest need more time.

Enjoy!

Agreed, another month.  It's not ready yet.

Thanks all! I figured they would need a little more time, but I since these are my first shiitakes, I thought I would ask.. Damn, I love this forum! Everyone is quick and informative.. What more can you ask for?
