Slot Canyons
    #14535742 - 05/30/11 12:40 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

I just did my first slot canyon a few weeks ago in Anza Borrego. There were a few small and not very technical slots that we went and checked out and it really got me interested in doing others in southern utah cause I love that area so much. Does anyone here do slot canyons? What are some easy ones that I could get started on? How should i start learning how to rappel more without just actually doing it?

Feel free to share any tips or stories too...

The obvious answer is to start setting up rappelling gear down steep slopes and try it that way, and to start using it while tree climbing.

Infact, i bet if you google tree climbing, you'll probably find alot of information.

I recently fell in love with technical canyoneering. it's a great excuse to look like a goofy fuck, even goofier than climbing:

I was in zion recently. the weather kept shitting, so we only got a couple slots in, but we got to do some climbing and drink a bunch of mormon beer, so it was still pretty good trip.

steep hills are great for learning to rappel. i would rather teach people to rappel and prussic at the same time. this ensures they know how to switch to a mid-line ascent from a rappel and vice versa (you should never start down a rope you can't start back up in a pinch, or start up one you can't turn back down). it also allows you to have them start from the ground, go up only several feet before rappelling.

if you can get to zion, there are just a great number of canyons of varying degrees of difficulty and length. for first technical slots i recommend short ones like keyhole or pine creek. it's a plus that they are both right by the road.

check out climb utah for details on many of the classics in that state, and canyonwiki for a fair amount of info on technical canyoneering in general.

if you aren't a strong hiker with some climbing skills you should definitely start by hiking non-technical canyons and polishing at least downclimbing skills, in addition to the rope skills. you should find an experienced partner if possible. if it is not, i recommend finding at least an inexperienced one, as long as they aren't a complete bonehead.

OMG dude, upon first look I LOLed like a mofo b/c you look like a goddamn super hero or something,
but no, being THAT geared out is badass. I wish I had a super huge rack that would allow me to climb anything.
I'm PMing you when I get back to st. george.

most of my gear is borrowed from a friend.

tinted goggles: like sunglasses but less likely to fall off, and they have a foam rim which helps keep sweat out of my eyes. they also fit perfectly over my eyeglasses. I actually bought these for freeway riding a couple years ago, but they fit the bill, so why not?

3/2 full wetsuit (3 mil on the torso, 2 mil on the extremities). the park assured me it was not nearly sufficient for immersion in the meltwater in most of the canyons, but the water was about 40-45 and as long as i kept moving it was plenty.

neoprene boots and gloves. they turned out to be a bit too sloshy for safe travel on really steep ground, or more than a little climbing, as the feet would slide around inside them, stretching the boot to foot purchase was not ideal. the traction of the sole itself was just fine, even for technical climbing (i usually climb in my approach shoes/hiking boots, since i can't afford climbing shoes at the moment).

BD momentum harness.

couple positron locking biners for misc. one rock biner (hms type with round cross section, suitable for munter belaying/rapelling, and for somewhat lower friction hauling.

two neutrino wiregate biners for my aiders and hooks, etc.

two hand forged hooks i made for the trip:

these are made myself from a carbon steel comparable to AISI 1075 and looks a bit rough around the edges. they are comparable to BD cliffhangers. i have plans to make some more in a few configurations. slung with 9/16 tubular webbing.

act belay/rappel device.

two diy aiders, made with 5mm accessory cord and 1" tubular webbing.

plenty of extra webbing for anchor slings and misc

a couple commercial rap rings (full known strength rating; you always want to have gear of sufficient, known rating in case of an emergency, such as a self/partner rescue situation), as well as some links cut from chain (cheaper, so you don't mind having to leave them behind.

a sling (hand tied from 9/16 tubular webbing for a personal anchor, also suitable for a bunny strap, etc.

day pack or dry-bag. in my case; a very water proof day pack, but with a drybag inside for dry clothes, smokes, maps, cameras, etc).

60m rope. we used a 60m half rope (8mm), dynamic dry shielded, since we where also there to climb. a static rope is fine for canyoneering in most cases, just don't take any falls on it.

a properly sharpened rope for cutting webbing, emergencies, etc.

head lamp, and an emergency flashlight inside the pack.

lighter inside pack for emergencies.

food type stuff for snacks and emergencies.

helmet.

i think that covers it. my buddy was outfitted similarly.
