I am going to quit smoking!
    #14534986 - 05/30/11 09:37 AM (12 years, 7 months ago)

i am going to quit smoking cigarettes. there are a couple methods i am going to try. but a big thing i feel will help is a sense of community and support. and since im always here on the shroomery, i thought this would be a good place to start.

i am going to start with orange juice and cream of tartar tonight. anyone ever tried this?

i am also (starting this morning) documenting pretty much everything smoking related. when, why and how much i smoke, and how much i cut back as i progress into the tartar program. why i want to quit smoking, how i feel, triggers, etc. im hoping it will help me learn as i go through and hopefully someday after i am smoke free, it might help give someone else some insight.

anyone got any other tips?

Thanks for always being there Shroomery

Fry

Good luck dude, I quit buying packs today actually... and have to be officially done by the 12th assuming I'll be randomly bumming till then.  Got an internship where all 560 square miles of the facility are non smoking so its the best chance I'll have to make a clean break with cigs...
Cream of tartar sounded nasty at first, but after a quick google it sounds kinda interesting... lol.

I don't have much advice because I never smoked in the first place, but I do offer you my support and wish you the best. If you ever need a confidence booster definitely hit up Shroomery. All you have to is ask man! Stay positive and remember your goal even in through your worst cravings.

it's really not that hard, I started smoking cigs at 15/16 and i quit when i was 22ish. I smoked a pack or more a day, if i were drinking easily a pack and a half, to 2 packs. I quit when i was having difficulty breathing and being a hypochondriac ( i watched my father go thru cancer / chemo and radiation) so i didn't want any part of that. I quit cold turkey, stopped buying them on a whim, that's how you quit. my mother, and 3 of my brothers smoke - i'm around 2 of them often, and i don't want to start again (they're $5 a pack, fuck that shit) the only time i think about them is occasionally i'll have dreams that im smoking in, even in my dreams i feel bad lol, but it's just a dream. Stop buying them, stop putting them in your mouth, stop worrying about it, it's all mental bro. You're just trying to break muscle memory in your arms that had you constantly sticking them in your mouth. I can put it to you this way, I tried to quit smoking and drinking sodas at the same time, i couldn't quit sodas, but i could quit cigs. wish you the best, all you gotta do is stop puttin em' in your mouth, they dont solve any problems

I quit like 4 months ago was a smoker of 4 years consistently chaining.

I went through a few attempts at quitting before i actually quit , they were good they prepared me in a sense it was like a storage in my subconscious that i wanted to quit so this one morning i woke up and i just snapped!

Said fuck it that's it , and that was it cold turkey kicked the habit

Months later i still have not bought one deck and quit weed in the process.. i think smoking weed is helpful when quitting cigarettes well if you are a smoker , but for the most part its all mental i was even receiving help in my dreams like occasionally i might feel like a cigarette then i would have a dream wherein i would smoke in and i would wake up satisfied

I am still able to smoke sociably in altered state of consciousness of alcohol and not be sucked in but now i dont want to drink alcohol either kickin em down =P cigs>weed>alc funny order i know but i think cigarettes is the most addictive of all the substances.

anyhow best of luck to you my friend you will be pleased with all the extra energy you receive upon quitting nicotine

thanks for the support everyone! i really appreciate it.

the cream of tartar in OJ seems to be helping alot with cravings and habit smoking. but i know the tartar cant do it by itself. i gotta stay strong and do my part too.

@88 ... yea i think that 85% of it is mental, but there are physical symptoms too. which arent so bad more me. except having a fuzzy head all the time and being unfocused. that bugs me. but the hard part is the mental part.

with the tartar youre supposed to smoke only when you actually really crave a smoke and not smoke the habit smokes. but i think today i will try chewing gum and maybe going for a walk when i crave. cold turkey too. i hate the way they make me feel.

anyways im rambling. thanks for the support guys!

yea, i forgot what chemical in your brain that you stop producing when you smoke, but it is a lot mental and a good bit physical, but you can't think of it that way, just gotta keep on keepin on.

Oh btw from now you must consider your self a non smoker !!

Its real funny after a while instead of craving you will start to see where you would of had a cigarette observing and exposing your inner thought patterns , smoking is so habit related

anyhow all the best

Good luck! I have never been addicted to cigs but I have been to benzos and opiates... I can't imagine the three being comparable, but I'm sure it's still hard. I wish you the best, quitting anything is never easy.

P.S. Not to thread-jack, but has anyone here quit cigs AND opiates/benzos? I am curious to know how quitting and the withdrawals compare.

Depends on how much you liked the opiates. Physically coming off opiates can be painful; I have a real close friend who come off OC and the first week he was absolutely miserable, and in a lot of pain. He was in inpatient rehab where they were taking care of him very well, but nothing was going to help him get through it but himself. He also just recently stopped smoking, and has said, "If i can quit OC, I can quit anything." He stopped smoking cold turkey and hasn't looked back so i'm guessing the two don't compare. For someone who hasn't had a drug problem though smoking can become a serious hurdle.

Hope all is going well Luckof, keep up the good work man! You can do anything you set your mind to!

I quit cold turkey last week, it's pretty tough. The cravings themselves aren't too bad anymore but the fact that I'm more or less constantly depressed and irritable is a major bummer.

i hear people say all the time cigs are the worst to quit and i have been physically addicted to all three opiates, benzos, cigs. I think the benzo/opiate withdrawls are was worse and much longer lasting were talking about paws lasting 6 months to a year. The cigs are hard to quit for different reasons namely the lack of immediate consequences.

I figured this was the case. I was taking ~240mg/day (sometimes 320) for a year straight and slowly got down to 160mg/day before I quit CT and was successful. I couldn't imagine cigs being nearly as painful, as I felt like I was dying, but I wasn't sure since I don't smoke.

Thanks guys

what is it like being addicted to cigarettes? i've smoked on and off for the past few years, but never needed to buy a pack, or bum a smoke, or felt any withdrawal symptoms. i remember one time, when i was smoking fairly often with weed, watching my mom smoke a cigarette and just fixating on it, really feeling like i wanted it; nothing crazy or debilitating, though.

Every time you feel the urge to smoke a cig, pop in a jolly rancher or a piece of gum.

Not only will it give your mouth something to do, but it will make your mouth so much more appealing than cigarette mouth.

Smoking cigarettes is one way in which a person can balance out their monoamines (dopamine, serotonin, norephinephrine)  because the smoke of tobacco is a reversable MAOI. This is why smoking is so addictive.  Aslo why it amplifies the effects of various drugs.

Nicotine itself is not addictive. But it is the result of the huge array of synchronistic chemicals which is addicting.  One has nicotenic receptors in the brain and to fill them one could well take buproprion.  Do not assume that if you take it just for amonth that it will magically cure you. I did that the first time I tried it for smoke cessation and I concluded wrongly that it didn't help.

The second time I took it I was prescribed it as a second line antidepressant along with mirtazapine and the combination both made me feel contented without smoking.  I haven't smoked now in three months. I have been on buproprion for five months.

I was on citalopram for two years before starting buproprion for libido issues, and then I tapered off the citalopram and switched to mirtazapine, and somewhere in between the two meds I stopped smoking and more importantly have stopped feeling any sense of desire for it at all.

So I am pretty certain that somewhere between attaining a more subjectively harmonious monoamine balance and filling the nicotenic receptors that this is why the smoking fell away without the strain that I had previously experienced.

That's my two centavos Buddy. Good luck!

I smoked a pack a day for 3 months out of boredom, I did inhale. It wasn't consecutive and I managed to not smoke a single cigarette for a week during those 3 months. Quit isn't really what I did since there wasn't an addiction to begin with. I now smoke 1-5 ciggs a day every other day. Maybe I was just lucky or didn't smoke enough.

i have great advice.. i looked on here for weeks everyday and this is the best thing i found for physical and mental addiction to cigs

  • when you smoke take 4 drags
  • make sure you are not doing something like talking or watching tv
  • feel the nicotine in your blood

a big key to quitting is breaking the addiction of things you do while smoking.  you will notice that you can easily have a craving filled with 4 drags if you concentrate hard on the chemicals.

Going cold turkey can be dangerous if you don't do it right, because you can actually end up more addicted.

The trick is to understand the mechanisms that keep you smoking. That's how I stopped.

When you're addicted, smoking feels great and not smoking feels terrible. Your subconscious mind has no encouragement to give up smoking, because it's effectively being punished for trying to quit.

I found it useful, if I'd gone even as little as one hour without smoking, to really big myself up and say "Great job!". To smile and to think of occasions in the past when I had succeeded at something difficult, so that your mind associates not smoking with pleasant feelings. It was also good to eat a bit of chocolate if I had gone an hour without smoking.

You must reward your abstention with positive emotions. If you punish yourself by thinking "This sucks, I wanna smoke" then you will fail, and it'll be harder to quit next time.

Hope this helps.

I find that syrian rue tincture taken orally fights off any cravings I have for a couple hours. After it wears off I can either take more or smoke a cigarette.

I think I'll stick with the syrian rue this time

as i said in another quitting thread.

the symptoms of withdrawl are all in the mind and easy to overcome!

its a lot easier than a lot of people (mostly people who have given in to their 'cravings') will lead you to believe

agreed 100 percent.

i find the hardest thing to get over is the feeling of leaving the house withought the pack of cigarettes and lighter in my pocket when i do the 'checks' before i leave.

I smoked Camel Filters and Marb Reds for four years straight and quit cold turkey.  It's almost been four years(December).

It helps if you stop hanging out with smokers.

It helps if you avoid small conveinant stores.

It helps if you adopt a healthy diet and regular exercise.

It helps if you eat slowly and eat on your breaks at work(if you work).

It helps if you take up new healthy activites.

Scratching other peoples cars may help.
