how long can a spore print survive?
    #14533182 - 05/29/11 09:38 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

I just found a whole bunch of old spore prints that i had in an envelope for the last 10years

what are the odds that they might still produce life?

I've fruited Ps. cyan from 15 year old prints that I'd kept in the fridge the whole time. I soaked some of the spores in sterile water for a month or so before plating them on agar.  Mostly you need to rehydrate them, but I've also heard that cubensis spores don't keep as well...it's easier to just get fresh prints. :mushroomgrow:

I'd try them anyway just to see, soak them like PS said, it'd be fun to see what comes of it!

I think that you'll find that ten year old spores are more mature and a whole lot wiser...
:imo:

(They ARE tougher than you'd think though. Definitely let 'em soak for a spell first.)

I was delayed in my project and so considering trying them again.

The way I used to do it was to just sprinkle the spores right onto the substrate.  no syringe.

can't find a description of that tek now.  anyone know where it is?

so if i do this soaking thing what am I doing differently?

You're preparing sterilized water in some container, and introducing spores from the prints to it under sterile conditions, and then waiting a month or so, after which you take tiny amounts of the visible spores and try to germinate them on agar plates.  At least that's the way I've done it.

Perhaps you could just saturate the spore print, wait a while, let it dry out, and then try your normal technique.  Dunno.

right.. well it's minimal risk so i guess i might just try to do it the way I've always done it and hope that there is enough moisture in the substrate to adequately hydrate those little spores and come to life.  they are magic afterall.
