Best way to consume reishi?
    #14259671 - 04/08/11 04:57 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

I have searched a lot but came up with inconclusive results. I would greatly appreciate any input from people with knowledge/experience on the subject.

What I am really interested in is if just eating dry mushroom powder is beneficial, can the stomach digest it and absorb  all the medicinal compounds?

From what I have read, water extraction (tea) extracts only polysaccharides, and alcohol extracts only triterpenoids. Is this true?

I wanted to try tea (and certainly will), but if the above statement is true, 'double extraction' is the way to go, I don't want to miss out on all those awesome anti-inflammatory compounds.

But what I would really like to do is throw some powder in my raw smoothies and drink it that way. Is that possible? Some say yes, some say no, does anyone have any experience on the subject?

Thank you very much for your answers!

NO, the cell walls are too thick... have you tried eating wood or cork???

your best bet is to make some tea, boil for at least 20 minutes

Powdered and capsuled is the way to go imho. You have to grind a fairly small amount at a time and be sure to grind it very fine. You'll want to wear a mask because when you open the coffee grinder spores and powder will rise into the air and you don't want to breathe that. This is the same way I prepare reishi for tea. If you take it a step further and capsule you get all the benefits. If you make tea you only get some of the benefits but you get to drink tea. They have a tendency to dehydrate you when ingested in capsule form.

No, alcohol extracts Polyphenols.  I do double extractions of Chaga with
cheap 80 proof vodka to get both the polysaccharides and the polyphenols.

For triterpenoids you have to use terpene solvents and evaporate them
away after extraction, isopropyl etc.  I doubt you could digest the triterpenes anyway.

If you use 96% ethanol it should  be possible to extract the triterpenoids.

So fungus_tao, you definitely notice the benefits from raw dry powdered fruitbodies?
I have seen several members of the shroomery whose opinion regarding medicinal mushrooms I respect using them this way, and I do believe they are indeed digestible.
But encapsulating is somewhat inconvenient for me, I'd have to order the capsules and filling machine from outside the country (and pay huge shipping rates), and am not really a fan of animal products (gelatin).
I will try mixing the powder in smoothies, at first just to see if I mind the taste.
What would be the best way to preserve double extract? Making ice cube doses and freezing?
Thank you everyone for answers!

grinding and powdering the raw reishi will work.  Personally i do not think it is as effective as extracting.

Water will extract the polysaccharides to get the best extraction you need to boil about 2-3 hours.

Alcohol (i use 96%) will extract the triterpenoids and you need these for the anti-inflammatory effect they have.

If you are doing both water and alcohol then preserve in a tincture bottle if water only ice cubes work very well.

I spent a few hours last night searching through the forums to find a
few different ways to ingest reishi to get the medicinal benefits.

Here is what I found:

It's best to dry the reishi first, then boil for a few hours. The
tea itself is pretty nasty, but with a bit of honey or mixed with
reguar tea it's not too bad. Mrs rabbit often boils it up in bulk
, then freezes the liquid to use later when making rice or pasta.
We generally eat a bit of reishi every day.
You're correct that you can't eat them directly. They're woody and
very tough, but the actives will extract into water.

Hi Quoiyaien, I only just noticed your reply now. Hopefully you're still around.
Here is an example of making 12 days worth of tea at 5g per day dose.
1) Get 60g of dried, shredded reishi mushroom
2) Put it in 1 liter of water, bring to the boil, stirring occasionally.
3) Once it's come to a boil for a few minutes, reduce the heat so its just simmering.
4) Keep simmering or medium-low heat for 1-2 hours. If water level gets too low, top it up.
5) Strain the liquid into another pot, which is also on medium heat. This is to reduce the volume of the liquid
6) Put the mushroom material back into the first pot and repeat steps 2-4 two more times for a total of three extractions.
7) Reduce the volume of the resulting tea until it reaches 180ml (or however much liquid fits in 12 cubes in your ice cube tray).
8) Pour the cooled liquid into an ice cube tray with an equal volume in all 12 holes (my ice cube tray has 12 cubes, maybe yours has another amount, so adjust accordingly).
9) Each day, pop a reishi cube into a small amount of warm water so it melts. Shot it back like a shot of whiskey and then have some sips of plain water afterwards if you don't like the taste (while the taste of reishi may be unpleasant, it washes away real easily). If its a hot day and you feel like a temperature and taste sensation you can just suck on a reishi cube directly. Think of the flavour as the goodness permeating into your body
10) Enjoy the benefits of a reishi-tweaked immune system

Thank you all for the answers!
Solumvita, do you think 96% alcohol is absolutely necessary for extraction of triterpenoids or do you use it just to be sure? Most recipes for double extraction say to use 'cheap 40% vodka'.
Also those recipes say to combine both alcohol and water extract and reduce it, and since all alcohol evaporates, is it still possible to keep it in a tincture bottle at room temperature? Sorry for the stupid questions, solvents, solutions and chemistry in general have never really been my thing.
Thanks again!

I would still like to know if double extract can be kept at room temp?
Most places say to freeze it. If I evaporate all the alcohol to reduce the volume of the liquid, will I still be able to keep the extract in a bottle at room temperature, or in the fridge, without freezing it?
Thank you!

the double extract can be kept at room temperature, just as long as the alcohol content is higher than the water, alcohol is a natural preserver.

Are there any health differences between antler and conch reishi?

Question of the day... I'll dig up some research if I have time later, but I believe there are a lot of constituents in the conks (esp pore surface) that just aren't found in antlers.  My personal believe is that a good mix of the two is best when tincturing, but I don't have much to back that up as far as literature.

If anyone else has different info on this I'd be quite interested to hear

Are the health benefits really noticeable ? Or is it like, just eat them and hope they do something good?

i havent gotten sick since i started taking reishi about 5 months ago.  usually i would get sick 4-5 times a year, just a bad cold,  nothing terrible. i have no idea if its the reishi or a coincidence....but, living with a roommate who gets sick a lot and co workers who do as well, i think its more than a coincidence

Personally, and I have no evidence to back this up, it just kind of makes sense. I believe that conks are going to have more medicinal compounds. Simply by virtue of growing to full maturity, the mushroom has lived its full life cycle. It was able to do its thing to its fullest.  Also supposedly spores have a higher medicinal content than the rest, and you will only get spores from conks.

I prefer to consume it in powder form. I prefer to add it to different beverages, tea for example. The trick here is to not haste. When you first start consuming it, start with a scoop of no more than 3-4 grams. Depending on your preferences you can also add the powder in coffee or water. Having stirred it, drink in small sips and give it a little time to be absorbed by your body. I think this the best and safest way to consume cordyceps based powders. Hope I was helpful.
