  .
I wondered apon these while walking with my son in my grandfathers woods.
Habitat: Open area in woods in wood chip( have been sitting for nearly three years now) highly saturated. Midwestern Illinois. Nearest tree was 7 to 8 ft away. No immediate cover
Description "egg": Thin, smooth skin covering clear, jelly like material. skin was attached to very thick mycelium. nearly a 1/16" thick "root".
Description "spike": The one found was nearly 3" tall. hollow with a pored, sponge like interior. starting creamy white then to pink, nearly red. fragile.
Smell: didnt smell it. Sorry.
Spore color: I wouldnt have any idea on how to print this thing.
This pile of chips was completely permeated with mycelium. Every scoop was filled with these root like strands. There were many other mushrooms present, but this one just boggled me. Originally thought it was a puffball til I started seeing its evolution. The day was high 80's and had a fresh and heavy down pour the day before. These pictures were taken about 2pm. These things were mainly found on the north side of the pile. The pile is not very high but thought it might be useful.
I know that I havent followed all of the rules, but didnt really know them when I started taking pictures. This spot is about an hour away form where I live. Im just very curious. I have never seen anything like this. Im just interested in what the hell it could be. Thanx in advance.

Thanks for the replies. Figured a stinkhorn but from what Ive read, they make it seem like its stong enough to smell just being in the vacinity of it. This was not the case. Either way, very cool!
To you, wildernessjunkie, Im glad to be of some service to you! After I showed him a few mushrooms, He would go "AAAhhhhh, dad, look!" every time he found something. Have to get him used to not grabing and touching everyone though. He's only three.
