Lime in Sub Jars
    #14532510 - 05/29/11 07:24 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Does anyone know if it's possible to prevent molds by adding some hydrated lime to substrate jars before pressure cooking?  Or maybe adding lime to a grain soak before loading jars?  I got to thinking about it, because my first successful casing was due to adding lime to the casing mix (all my other casing attempts contamed). So, I figured maybe adding lime to the substrate beforehand could be a preventative measure.

Any thoughts?

The only place in Mycology for hydrated lime is in casing layers and for pasteurizing wheat straw.

The best preventative measure against contamination of grian spawn or the bulk substrate is proper sterile procedure.
