Giant Laminar Flow Hood?

So I get home today and see an ad on CL finally for a Laminar Flow Hood for $200 dollars. I show up and it is huge! Not only that but the guy threw in a impulse sealer and some bags with tyvek GE ports! Now I'm not 100% sure if it will create strong flow over the whole thing but I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I figure if I keep it running a day in advanced to working that the room will be pretty clean either way

That is bad-ass man. I'm jealous.
To test the air flow of the hood to see if it's proper, ignite a lighter directly in front of the hood when it's on. A hood with proper air flow will bend the flame to a 45 degree angle.
All the amount of time you need to run it before working is 2 hours topps. (that's how long i run mine for).
Also like to spray a 1 to 10 part bleach/water solution on all surfaces of the room I'm working in as a preventative against mold spores. Also, spay the surface of the hood with either a 1 to 10 parts alcohol/water solution or lysol before you turn it on to work in front of.

how does a flow hood work exactly/what does it do? and don't say UTFSE this is a totally appropriate thread to ask a legitimate question and I would like a real time informed opinion...

It blows clean air so you don't need to worry about contaminates, eliminating the need for a still air box.

A flow hood basically provides a cube of moving, filtered air which you can work in front of safely without worrying about contamination. Due to static pressure from behind the HEPA filter, air gets pushed out uniformly across the whole surface of the filter.
And UTFSE, this has been discussed plenty of times.

UTSF! (j/k, babz)
A flowhood filters the air in a room down to .12 microns, creating a sterile, lab environment for culture work. The most sterile flow of air is 3 inches in front of the hood so all work should be done in that flow of air.
Check out RR's sample videos. Take a look at the sections on "sterile technique" and "grain to grain transfers". Pretty good rundown on the dynamics of, and how to use a flowhood in those clips.

It lives in the living room. Next to the couch. The gf bitches about it, too. Funny you mention it. Nice flowhood, by the way.
