Oh sweet, Cheers dude
Edit: Does anyone have a source for Tyvek filter patches? Best to go with envelopes and cut them to size?
Cheers

You dont need tyvek. I normally either just use tightly packed polyfil or even easier is micropore tape across the hole.
edit: polyfil is better than micropore tape. I dont think micropore is supposed to be used alone as a filter but I have had no problems with it. I usually do two layers of it.

SFDs > everything else. Polyfill is too annoying, I wish I could stop using it for monos actually.

Thanks I'll try get a decent deal on one.
You got any idea where I could get good grains as a beginner from a real life shop (ideally). What grain is even best for beginners?

Just get cheap wild bird seed bags from wilkos. Search on the forums for ideal ingredients list. Even in the wilko bags the cracked corn/split maize is not ideal because it can get a bit starchy but its fine as long as you don't let it get much beyond simmering.
WBS or whole oats

Try to find a local whole food/organic food wholesale place, there are a couple near me just had to google them as they are not gonna be on the highstreet.
I think rye is the best grain to work with for anyone, no worries about what may be in the mix like with WBS (wild bird seed) and just generally kicks ass in terms of nutrients and is fairly forgiving in terms of prep, good sturdy stuff, as long as you don't boil the hell out of them and split them open it's .
Very hard to go wrong with rye, haven't used anything else since I tried it about 12 years ago!!
Good luck, oh and try to find organic if you can, again just so ya know that it hasn't been fucked with or treated with any weirdness that could mess with fungus.

Lol, each to their own! nothing wrong with WBS as long as ya know your brand/mix is reliable, also find it easier to spot any possible contams/issues with rye berries, but once ya have a grow or 2 under ya belt you'll be fine.
A lot of people use whatever they can get locally or cheapest, def the deciding factor for a lot of folks!!

An independent pet shop near me is the cheapest I have found. Some of the chain store pet shops take the piss, grains costing more than organic grains in supermarkets. Charging 3-4 times what the independent pet shop charges -it's run by the 2 old owners who are disgusted when I tell them what the other chain stores charge, and confused when I say I have no pets!
Ask in independent health stores about getting grain in bulk, grain for human consumption is of a higher quality and should have less contaminants to start with, animal feed grain can be stored in worse conditions with higher moisture content etc. In a local health stores I was offered 2 or 3kg bags for about half the price per kilo as their standard 500g bags on the shelf. If you go to a chain store like holland & barret they will probably do nothing. The small shop took my name and said it would be there next week with their deliveries.
Wheat or barley or oats are quite similar to rye, in the US rye is pretty common and cheap and so its used. Many books/guides are of US origin and so they recommend rye, do not end up paying over the odds for rye if they are charging a lot as they are getting it in specially.

Organic cereal grains are often treated with large amounts of bacillus thuringiensis. FYI.

Huh, thanks Pasty!
Been using same brand/supplier for a decade or so, run by a really sweet older couple, really know their stuff and they assured me their products are not treated with anything at all. Based on my mono's etc, they were telling the truth!!
Is bacillus thuringiensis more likely to be used in supermarket type products, or are bulk 25-50kg sacks just as likely to be treated?? It's funny how after 15+ years of doing something ya still take things for granted as being standard and universal.

Depends on the farmer who grew it and the regulations of your country.

Does it matter if it's rye flakes or does it have to be rye berries? This is all so confusing!
