have a look in health food shops. that's where I found my rye berries
alternatively, buy some wild bird seed from poundland, seems to work ok (check a few recent TEK's, some people like to take bits out, other leave it as it is )

B&M are cheap for WBS if you have one nearby. Think it was £5 or £6 for 12.5kg

I'll try and remember that for the future. mine were twice that price (but still a bargain in terms of end product )

I got some of this, have yet to use it. It said it is 0.6kg on the pack, weighed about 660g, presuming the bag is about 10g. Its a very small pack, I went down expecting my bag to be full with just it, instead it was full of toblerones and other scoffs!

my local health shop sells grains in 500g packs or less, I asked about larger ones and they said they could get me in 3kg packs and it was about half the price per gram or less.
Remember that rye is used a lot since its more readily available in the US and so simply a cheap grain, and you are usually reading guides & books written by guys in the US. There is nothing magical about it, and it can cost a lot more in some places simply because it sells less and so costs more to get in and stock etc. Many would consider wheat a perfectly good equivalent substitute. I am currently using barley from a pet shop, 6kg for €3.95. They have wheat and oats cheap too, all quite similar. I do not bother with ogranic grains, they can still contain "organic fungicides" anyway. Fungicides should usually only kill spores and not living myc, so if you are transferring through agar wedges it should not really matter. In fact I am experimenting with the use of fungicides on my grain now, ones known to be used by mushroom growers.

Well i buy 25kg at a time which is probably half the price again of 3-5kg and i notice even the guys from the US talk about other grains being much cheaper over there. I did read RR say that rye is the most nutritious grain for mycelium bar none but i know what you mean - i'm very tempted to start experimenting with oats and different bird seeds from the pet shop - some come without the sunflower seeds but have other stuff in i'm not sure mycelium would like or not - will have to have a look into it. With the coir, i buy that in bulk(ish) too on eBay and i always buy organic.

Corn is another good and cheap alternative to rye and you can get it an any supermarket.
I do use rye though, there is an organic wholefood wholesale place near me, they do 25kg bags for £13 and they are a really nice local business, in fact they offered me credit if I am ever short of cash or wanted stuff on tick.
Asda do the cheapest/best tubs I have found, and if you use the self service check-out it doesn't matter if you accidentally stack 2-3 together and only remember to pay for one.. I am so forgetful!

Wow! Great price ... and the thing is, we all have horsey shops somewhere nearby who will sell this or something similar. The question is, how do you prepare it? And is it any better than wbs??

It's not grain. It's Wheat Bran, a powered supplement. More for gourmet mushrooms than actives. But there isn't a UK Supplies thread in the Gourmet Mushrooms forum.
That said, the same supplier does have 25kg of Wheat Grain for £5.92 which could be good for grain spawn...

Got some mallow chocolate roll things in dealz, which is owned by poundland so I expect poundland will have them too for £1. I cannot find them on either website though.
They are thinly coated mallow sticks. The container is rectangular PP5 and very transparent and looks about 1L volume or maybe more. The lid seal seems pretty good too, better than some sold as containers.
The container even says reusable on it and is thicker than most sold with food in them.
