Interesting. Do you fold the bags over to fit them in that sealer or seal a bit at a time?

No no, i start in the middle, shut the device and run it out to the edge then go back to the middle, shut it again and work my way to the other side. Seals them up no problem - it's just a heated piece of metal which melts the bag slightly to seal. Never had an issue with it - great piece of kit - small, cheap and effective.

Damn, I wish I'd thought of that before ordering a 12" impulse sealer from ebay. I'm already taking over the house with mushroom kit. I'm guessing my other half would much rather I had a little 2 inch one like yours rather than this 12 inch monster...

I was the same gray - stuff all over the place and then i had a clear out - cleaned up my game and slimmed everything down.
Now i use grain in 1 litre pickled onion jars (89p) with patches made from felt from The Works. I use one of the jars to colonise two filter bags of grain in the open air before sealing them with that little tool. Once colonised i pasteurise coir/verm/gypsum in another filter bag and add the fully colonised grains to it. Wait for it to colonise (about one week) then expose to light - just a normal energy saving light bulb in a clip on mains light. Come back 7-10 days later and there are loads of mushrooms. Easy.

I've already detailed what i do - rye grain jars with felt filters -> grain filter bags -> filter bags with pasteurised coir/verm + light = mushrooms. Each step has it's own tek, which can be found here with a little searching and reading.
I don't personally buy into the 'every newbie should start with pf tek' thing but i would advise you read, read and read. Each step in any successful setup, whether it be mine or any other, takes time - time enough for you to read about, decide upon and prepare your next step. This is all part of the learning process.

Cheers MB for the reply i would say i have built up a fair bit of knowledge by scouring this forum. I just need to start putting it into practice instead of being a man behind a screen. I'm hoping i could skip the cakes and go straight into agar with a few mini monos n see how i fair. What I'm after is whats the easiest stuff to get hold of tubs grains spores in the uk. Sorry not the best at english, i struggle trying to release what is in my head into writing.

Hey Stool your English is fine mate. I suppose it depends on what you want out of all this. For me growing mushrooms is a great hobby - there's nothing in the world like seeing your first little shroomies raising their heads from the weeks of mycelium work you've invested in. It can be the most frustrating hobby and the most satisfying. But when all is said and done, if i could go out and pick them regularly i would do. Shrooms are a great teacher - they've changed my life immeasurably for the better. I've never had so much purpose (spiritually) as i do now. Never had so much understanding. Never had so much inspiration and direction. So for me it's about the eating, not so much the growing. You don't need agar to get started but if it's the hobby you like then yes agar is probably the way to go. I've used agar with great success but found that overall it was a real pain in the ass to be honest. As for what's easiest to get hold of - just go for a walk around pound shops / B&M, places like that. You see all kinds of things you could use. I used to grow cakes in plastic tubs and throw them out afterwards - 10 for a pound nearly twice the volume of jam jars. Why not try the bucket tek? Or the Mudafukin bottle tek? Or Invitro growing? Don't make things complicated for yourself until you've got a few grows under your belt because this hobby can become quite unenjoyable if there are no shrooms at the end of it.

my advice? follow the tek in my link (Evilmushrooms take on BRF Cakes), get yourself to Wilko's and start with PF tek. why?
you will fuck up, and if you're fucking up a whole monotub, you'll be gutted, but on the other hand if a few rice flour cakes go sour, you will still have a few left for good times
good luck!

+1, lots of containers are PP5 with no need to be heat resistant. I was getting soup containers every day or so from a guy in work. I was getting 700ml glass jars of carrots, gherkins were mentioned, much as I like them I would not eat a lot, but could easily eat a half jar of carrots. Sweets often come in tapered PP5 containers, if there is a kids party adults are also going to you could arrive with loads and keep them. I have several ice cream tubs which are PP5.
I keep meaning to ask guys in local takeaways & cafes if they have any jars, some are glad to get rid of them as they otherwise might have to pay.

As was mentioned previously in this thread I too found Better Equipped a good supplier.
They do 18 boro glass petris for £16. And delivery was really fast to me.
I also noticed that their Culture Bottles do not pressure cook very well. The seals inside the lids melt. These things:
However, their McCartney bottles do survive pressure cooking just fine. These ones:

If going with a sponsor I would recommend getting a sclerotia/stone producing strain, if you go with a particular sponsor they might throw in a free cubensis syringe if you ask nicely & say you are a member. Sclerotia are more foolproof as they never need to be opened or tended to -but they are a boring grow. If your cubensis fail these may still work for you.

I've used Avalon Magic Plants a few times for spore syringes - normally 5 in a pack i think. Always top quality - never had a bad one. Once you get your mycelium growing, you can use that to make more - i haven't bought a syringe in over a year and still have a couple left somewhere. I've also had a print for 2 euro from free spore ring which was nice but it took a long time to arrive.
