Any idea on the cheapest place for 70% isopropyl alcohol? Considering how much of this I'll be using, I'm happy buying in bulk to keep prices down in the long term.

You can get 5 litres of 99% iso on eBay for under £20 delivered.  Just dilute it down to 70% with water.

Thanks for the link, but I'd much rather just buy 70% ISO so it's one less thing to worry about.

Perfect. Thanks for sharing the link. That's a great price. Next week, once I get paid, I'll definitely pick some up. You can't have enough 70% iso laying around.

This plan of buying little bits and pieces each week once I've been paid is working out pretty well. During the time it takes to round up all of the supplies, I'm spending the rest of the week doing as much research as I possibly can. Whenever I do something, I like to ensure it goes as well as possible. Obviously, I'm not expecting everything to go perfectly each and every time, but I sure hope I can prevent as many issues as I possibly can.

Does everyone here use Parafilm for wrapping around agar plates after inoculation? It's not something I was aware of until earlier this week. From what I've been told, it's the preferred tape of choice. If so, can anyone recommend the best place to buy it at a reasonable price? My agar plates are 90mm x 15mm.

Thanks again for all the help folks. This UK Supplies thread has truly been a great helping hand. If I hadn't of found it, I would have been buying way overpriced supplies.

Yes, I grow on a fairly humble scale so don't rip through any of my supplies like some of the more active growers. I initially was a bit unsure about buying a whole role of parafilm, but it was a great investment. I love the stuff.

Or you can use cling wrap cut in to one and a half inch rolls. My 50p supermarket own brand has already lasted a couple of years and I’m still not even halfway through it.
You do need a very sharp knife to cut it but it doesn’t get any cheaper than that. So easy to use too.

Second on the cling wrap. Mines cut to about the same width. Sharp kitchen knife does the job or even better a pvc pipe cutter if you have one laying about (need to dig mine out.) 75M X how ever many sections you can cut from a full roll for about 80p

5 votes for cling film, 1 vote for Parafilm. Cling film ftw! It looks like cling film is what I'll be buying! Sorry coversall, you know we love you all the same! You've obviously got a fatter wallet than the rest of us! :flipthebird:

Over the weekend, my girlfriend took a trip to IKEA and picked me up 6 SAMLA Boxes from IKEA which look perfect to get me started. After seeing them though, I kinda wish I had bought another 2. No doubt, I'll be back to IKEA before I get started so I'll pick up another 2 when I'm next there.

This week, I'll be buying a SAB and some 70% ISO. I'd considered buying a couple spore syringes and storing them in my fridge, but I reckon I'm going to leave those until the very end once I've got all the rest of my equipment rounded up and my grow space all set up and I'm ready to rock 'n roll.

Cling film it is! Yeah I remember it taking me months of research and supply gathering before I actually took the plunge. So exciting when you see your first bit of mycelium devouring grain and your first little pins poking their head up.

Yeah, rounding up all my supplies over the space of a few months seems to be the way to go. It's not breaking the bank, and I'm taking my time, buying everything I need at the lowest cost people. Only last night, I picked up 100g of Agar over on eBay since I kept getting warnings that it was close to running out of stock. Earlier on in the week, I also received 6x blocks of Coco Coir (650g) too. It's safe to say, things are slowly coming together.

As for growing, I honestly cannot wait to get started. This is the first time I've ever took a deep dive into mycology. Since liberty caps are all over the place here in Autumn, I used to go out hunting every season. Problem is, I'm now a little older with less and less time on my hands to go exploring. Growing myself seems like the next best thing!

I guarantee you won’t regret it! One thing I will say though is you’ll never have everything, there’ll always be that ‘just one more thing that I need’ haha. I’ve just moved on to glass petri’s and pouring agar after doing just over a year of no pours. I’ve now talked myself into needing a petri rack to neatly store and transport my dishes.

It never ends but I love it!

Thought it worth posting These

They are absolutely perfect for slants and from the looks of it, exactly what Mycopunks use on their website.

I personally use these and can say they hold up to a PC cycle no problem. Just add a pre-soaked lolly stick or coffee stirrer, agar and the culture you wanna keep and you’re good to go!

That I could believe. Right now, I'm trying to round up the essentials to get me started. Once I get more into it, I'll continue spending. A pressure cooker is on the cards, but I don't want to dish out £200+ for a Presto-23 for one just yet. The plan is to see how much I enjoy the hobby first. If it turns out it's something I'm thoroughly enjoying, I'll no doubt fork out the cash. Until then though, I'm going to be conservative with my overall spending.

So to get me started, my initial thoughts are to inoculate wholegrain rice bags. Instead of shooting them up directly with spore syringes, instead what I'm going to do is get setup with agar so I can test the genetics for contamination using agar first. The last thing I want is to be inoculating rice bags with contaminated spore syringes from the get go. Agar seems like the best way to figure out what's what.

My question is, are wholegrain rice bags the best way to get started? They seem pretty effective. 90 Second Mycology gets a lot of hate here, but the dude is pretty knowledgeable, and seems to try and get people moving without having to spend a fortune on equipment to getting started.

Let me know what you think folks. I'll continue posting as things progress. At the minute though, things are fairly quiet on my end. Agar should arrive tomorrow. On Friday, I'll order 70% ISO and a thermostat.

Hi there, first post, long time lurker. Can anyone point me in the direction of where to source suitable coir bricks in a typical town centre? I picked up a bag of canna coco+ from a hydro shop but I'm reading mixed things about whether it has trich added and don't want to risk it.

If you're looking for something more local, this may do the trick:
