So I just birthed 3 of my cakes... They had myc growing heavily into the verm barrier and from what I have read that is a noticeable sign that your jar is done. I wiped down every one of my work stations with soap and water, all the utensils I used as well including the big bowl I am dunking them in. The jars had pretty thick growth through the verm barrier when I opened them. They smelled REALLY shroomy which made my mouth water :drool2: and are very densely white even after rinsing. The water is about room temp maybe a lil cooler (from the tap). I am adding perlite to my FC rinsing it with soapy water in the FC and making sure it is rinsed completely clear. I just discovered that I dont have quite enough. I'll be putting them in my FC after rinsing and rolling about this time tomorrow. After I put them in the FC I'm going to spray the shit out of em for about 30 seconds along with the sides of the FC and then just fan every now and again until the FC is completely dry (as dry as it'll get at 95%+Rh) and then mist and pan normally to induce pins on a 12/12 light cycle from a 6400k cfl.
Any concerns with my goings on this far??? Suggestions perhaps?

Sounds good to me, what grade of perlite is it? Can you get more?

you're using a SGFC, right?

um I didn't know there were different grades of perlite but I would say medium coarse, yes I can get more and I did I have approx 5 in of perlite all across my FC I washed it with antibac soap then ran SUPER hot water from my shower (about 130degrees F) and rinsed it until the water ran clear washing the FC as I worked. I wiped down all the area that the FC will be in with bleach, put some paper towels down where it would be standing and used my jars as a 4 in stand. I'm dunking for 12 hrs then putting em in and seeing how it goes...

I like to use a colander.  Scoop it full of perlite, rinse it well, let it drain until it's barely dripping, then dump it into the FC and repeat until FC is full to your desired level.

IMO washing the perlite with soap and water is unnecessary.  For a long time I rinsed with tap water mixed with H202, but now I just use tap water alone and haven't noticed a difference.  Just my opinion though, do what ever floats your boat.

Nice, the grade of perlite is numbered. I have 4-5, which is Large perlite. I was just wondering because the size of the perlite does of an effect on how the SGFC operates, as some perlite is too small & will clog holes.

You should be golden dude. Remember that evaporating moisture from the surface is the number one pinning trigger, so be sure to fan those babies.

Like I said I was planning to dunk (for 12 hrs I just can't wait!) then roll put em on foil in the FC mist the holy crap out of em for about 30 seconds each (very fine mist) and then fan periodically until it looks dry (or as dry as a humid environ will allot (I fluffed up the perlite a shit ton after rinsing it). So I think I have the right idea?

:bigyesnod: just be sure to fan the hell outta them after misting. I use a very fine mist as well.

I fanned em for like 2 min after putting them into the FC I don't plan on misting again for 1-3 days until it starts to really let moisture go. I want an awesome pinset! I grated a couple jars I thought 'weren't consolidated' but were 100% colonized and mixed em with 50/50 bulk pasteurized and when I grated them they were VERY white all the way through. I'm letting these colonize and consolidate I put a dry verm layer  and foil with little holes through it. My cakes are now rolled and in the FC misted and fanned and now... We wait! :birdfeed:

So my FC was havin some humidity issues so I taped over a few holes. Any body have an estimate on how long it'll take my shroomies to pin I keep reading about 7-10 days after fruiting if I let them consolidate which IMO I did. Everything looks good so far, just have to wait for pins. I am fanning about every 3 or 4 hours or so until the cakes dry a lil then I will begin misting (before fanning) about 4x a day. Sounds like a solid plan to me.

yea, you should be good brotha.

knots are due to high CO2 colonization then an introduction of FAE.

Do you know how DIRTY the rinse water from washing my perlite???  :uhoh:  After agitating for several mins with my hands in a soap solution I began to rinse it all out get rid of the soap etc. I TIMED IT on my wrist watch cuz it was something to bet 5$ on with my fiance. The water ran almost black for about 01:20 then proceeded to run muddy grey for about 3 mins I had to rinse it on full for a grand total of 8-9 min  to get the water to run mostly clear. EEEEEEW--- that's all I have to say. Lord only knows what's in that...

I am looking for someone who wants to sell/trade a HIGH QUALITY 99.97% or better HEPA filter at least 22inx32inx18in in dimension to construct my very own flow hood I wish to take my hobby to new heights with tasty edibles and need a hood to do so in a practical manner.
Please voice your interest in this thread, pm me (only serious considerations please), or any advice pointing me in the right direction as to some where to obtain such filters (spawn bags and a PC too for anyone that has one to spare) All these items can be found with a little off the beaten path searching and asking. Thanks everyone!

(I will make a donation to the shroomery as well if I am steping on someones toes so to speak...)

if you haven't worked with agar or done grain to grain transfers yet I would get the hang of them first with a simple glovebox.  they're incredibly cheap and take 10 minutes to build.  that way you can practice your sterile procedures down pat.

I understand you're very excited about all this; that's great! but I would not jump into a flowhood yet because you don't seem to be doing massive amounts of agar or grain to grain work (or have yet to do any? I dunno).

a glovebox can fulfill all your needs at this stage of the game.  that way, if something contaminates, you'll know that it is because of your technique and not a flaw with your flowhood construction, and you can fix accordingly.

Good advice Zyd,glove box technique is basically the same as in front of a flowhood, careful steady sure movement, its best to master a glovebox first to get your method down.I still use a glovebox even though it's been years since I started
