Whats your biggest fear when thinking about sobriety?
#14530376 - 05/29/11 12:07 PM (12 years, 8 months ago) |

For me... What the fuck will I do with myself???
Thats probably the sole reason i'm not 100% sober yet... I just don't know what I could possibly do that will occupy my time better...
That and the fear that nothing will be fun enough to do...
How bout you?

My fear is that I'll be the irritable, shit-talking asshole that I was prior to my relationship with weed.
And that if I stop using drugs, I'll suddenly be a suit and tie wearing insurance salesman with a two story cookie-cutter home, a bitch wife who drags me to church, kids that I didn't want and lame ass friends that I play fantasy football with.

And talking to people. I hate doing that shit sober...

My sober mind is still tormented by the southern evangelical Family Values fundamentalism that it was raised in.
Seriously though, I'm about to sober for 20 straight days, longer than I have been in a good 8 years. I have no idea what I'm going to do, as I won't be able to have sex or workout to relieve the stress, either.

I ALWAYS get high religiously at around 7:30 in the evening, every single day,. then the rest of my day is TV and video games.
Since I never watch TV or play video while sober (cause I just don't have that motivation to do so), what the fuck I'm I gonna do. I did all the serious stuff I needed to do while being sober.
Stupid weed... it always gives me that surge of motivation to play Xbox or watch a movie...

I'm getting to the age where sobriety is actually more fun, I think.
My friends get stoned, sit around playing video games. Get drunk, sit around playing video games (sometimes something fun comes up). I'm done with that. Being sober is actually pretty sweet. I feel smarter, quicker, motivated... it's nice.

If you just get stoned and play video games and watch TV, I think you could easily do that sober. But I think you will find that they are boring at their core and you will choose to do something more intellectually or socially engaging. There is nothing scary about being sober to me.

some people are very boring, which is usually why they do drugs so much. If your bored all the time, your going to use drugs. If you use drugs all the time and you stop, your gonna be bored.

I think if you "fear" being sober, you have a serious problem. Not fucking around. I have used drugs for years, and I never had got this "concept" that my friends promote. Being sober isn't bad. Its a different spectrum from being high, both have their ups and downs.

I love sobriety, especially my sobriety of lets say the last 5 years or so. Its getting evermore awesome and suitable to mount epic highs and ever greater projects onto.
Back when I was a stoner I feared sobriety, now if I smoke and the novelty wears off I often go, merh, wish I was sober now so I can *insert something requiring lack of intoxication and memory scramble*
My biggest fear with sobriety on longer stretches of it is that I lose my epic ninja skillz in tripping - ie that if I trip again, I won't be as able to handle it with the wild grace I'm used to. Like, if you havent practiced a skill for a long while, wont you lose it?
Losing it, especially on a psychedelic, is far less entertaining than watching other people lose it
A few weeks agho I turned part of my home into an epic mess while high and delusional, frantically looking for something that did not exist aided anmd hindered by all sorts of people and entities that did not exist either UGH. Never again.

I think the things I was afraid of happening while i wasn't 'sober' are coming true
I went from doing absolutely nothing, not even drinking, in high school to smoking nearly everyday and tripping on a semi weekly basis in college. That had some unfortunate repercussions. now I don't even smoke but still drink because of its 'social acceptability' . some would call that a phase but I wouldn't.I still think about nose diving back into psychedelics nearly everyday. I miss the adventure of it.
Now days I do find myself falling into these sobriety traps. I don't smoke or trip now mainly because of other people in my life don't want me to. I have a girlfriend who isn't ok with anything but drinking. its really frustrating. sobriety has trapped me into a lifestyle where i cant moderately indulge in psyhcs
sorry for the rant

I'm sober 2.5 years now, its pretty sweet actually. I bike a lot and skate at the rink, and I enjoy shows and movies more now because I can get into them better. I'm much healthier, I ace university, I enjoy reading now. I can say I'm happier now than I was before.

i set out on a 12 week alcohol abstinance. i made it to 11 weeks and then drank, not because i 'needed' to drink (or maybe i did), but there was this epic house party on the week before i was supposed to be finished, and i didn't want to pass up the opportunity of having a good time and possibly picking up some women. so i drank, as it helps me socially. and 11 weeks is good enough for me anyway. i was pleased with that. i haven't drunk since, which is about 2-3 weeks ago as well.
But what i learned was that sober life just isn't as fun as getting high/drunk/whatever it is. Maybe it's kind of sad that in my life i've now correlated fun/recreation/enjoyment with intoxication.

It takes a long time to reverse that feeling that you want to toke up or drink or whatever to enjoy yourself. When I was about to enter 4 months of rehab I couldn't imagine being sober more than a few weeks. Now its been years and I enjoy everything more now than I ever did high or drunk. When I see high or drunk people they annoy me because they act stupid but they don't realize it.

Not saying that sobriety is for everyone though, most people don't hit a bottom like I did. Those who do hit bottom end up either in rehab or dead or somehow manage to pull themselves out over time, or keep hitting bottom over and over never figuring out that it's a problem. All I know is if I drink I don't stop until I have alcohol poisoning. I had to quit.....

i definately noticed i was much healthier and happier during sobriety. but it kind of limited my options a bit for the mean time. i can kind of see how it would be the sort of thing that is " one step backwards, two step forwards " in time.
I guess the thing is that i just haven't settled into sober living, and to be honest i don't really want to at this point in my life. I've settled into intoxication in it's many forms, and even though its not the greatest thing, it's working for me right now and im happy, which is good.
but i'm sure a time will come in the future where i will need to say enough is enough and transition into a sober lifestyle.

It's tough to get really, actually sober, but when you do it's definitely great.
I was sober for a few months last year and everything was awesome. I read tons of books, I enjoyed the hell out of movies, kept a TIDY fucking house, did great with no stress at school, yeah somebody above mentioned it but sobriety is definitely better than intoxication.
Strange how this shit works out

Does the cravings or the thoughts of using again ever stop? Or do you think about it for the rest of your life?

why spend your whole life sober?? what's wrong with toking up every once in a while or going out and getting wasted on the weekend?
I don't see why people can't balance their drug use with their sober life...
unless you're a hardcore addict, then it's best if it's all or nothing, but i feel like people torture themselves into thinking it's either drug use or sobriety...there is a middle ground

There definitely is middle ground, but it's tough for me (at least with alcohol) to maintain it. Weed is different, it's easy to wait until the evening and then relax with a cool bowl, but with alcohol there's a definite "falling off the wagon" phenomenon where I start drinking on weeknights and just can't stop. It becomes such a major part of my emotional regulation that I can't conceive of going without. When I have responsibilities I usually limit myself to one or two beers per 24-hour period. But if I'm stressed out I find myself drinking like a fish in order to "cope."
Yeah, that's some pretty hardcore addiction talk. I just don't want to give it up. It's not like it poses major day-to-day problems, it's a great fucking time to drink with my friends, and I just love the experience of drinking in general.

I actually went to rehab, staid sober for 6 months then said "well, I made it 6 months, Im good" and hit bottom again.

Addiction is not only a function of yourself, but the substance you imbibe in and the culture you live in. Can you change something in your environment or of another habit that indirectly affects the cycle in which you find yourself?

being sober isn't that bad, i just stopped burning all day everyday been like a couple weeks now. made me realize holy shit i was a "stoner" not a lot of motivation to do shit and lazy as fuck. I still smoke but only on a Saturday night or something, its much better, get super fuckin high because no tolerance and its much more enjoyable. Can get pretty boring but you just gotta stay occupied.

It's always in the back of the mind. Of course the longest I ever went without was about 6 months, and although I didnt think about it ALL the time if I saw a certain TV show or someone drinking a certain kinda beer or smelled some dank Id think "gee I could go for that".

It's like A Scanner Darkly in the end, too much of a good thing and all that.
It was fun at first but when it gets to the point of consuming 6-12 substances a day and not having a sober moment for a few years its a little excessive and wears away on the sanity.

Goes away after a while, but can come back suddenly. I haven't had an alcohol or cocaine craving at all, even when we found a flap of coke in the sober house I was living in. The only craving I've had.. was for a cigarette one day about 5 months after quitting smoking when I was talking to someone while they smoked. I wanted so badly to ask them for one, but decided to just tell them I needed to go instead. I also drank a year after getting sober, just to see if I could do it because I had never been sober before and wanted to see if I was just a binge drinker or a real alcoholic. I drank the whole bottle, drove downtown and found some people with weed, they came back to my condo and we got drunk and stoned. I had a hangover for 2+ days that was one of the worst hangovers ever. So if you count that I've been sober a year, but 2 and a half if you don't count it.
But anyways, to get to your question, it does go away completely. I never think about drinking or smoking weed like I did daily for 16 years...I just look forward to getting a degree at university and moving on with my life.
It's crazy how smart we are when we get sober and put all the focus we had on drugs and partying into education.
The thoughts go away after a year or two. You go through a period of using dreams too where you're getting drunk or stoned in your dreams. That passes as well.
For me, if I do drugs again or drink, I start where I left off doing tons of it and drinking bottles endlessly. I'd probably kill myself pretty quick.
Rehab was intense, 3 people died including a friend I had made who's liver died one night about a month into rehab. It was one of the most intense experiences being in that place. I was put in a group with a homicide cop who was a drunk, the head doctor of an ER who was using morphine injections, and 3 soldiers from Afghanistan who had PTSD and were drinking to kill the pain......so it was fucking intense. I have no idea why they put me in that group but it was fucked up hahaha.....totally turned me around. I used drugs and alcohol to cover up anxiety and pain from a shitty childhood. I had to come to terms with my childhood beatings, and deal with anxiety with meditation etc rather than grabbing a bottle.
Anyways, I could go on forever about this subject. I think if you're truly happy in life being stoned, then its fine, but if you're using drugs and alcohol to kill emotional or physical pain, it's just going to get worse. Also, if you can't control it, you need to learn to or quit before its too late.
One of my buds was shot a dozen times in the head 2 weeks out of rehab, everyone believes if was due to debts he owed dealers. He hinted a few times in rehab that he owed some serious dudes money.

the important thing is that you've broken the habbit and have been living clean for 2 1/2 years. who cares if you had a one day relapse. you didn't fall back into it, and so i'd count it as 2 1/2 years sober isntead of just 1.

i don't know specifically, but i'm more inclined to not count a one day slip up as opposed to a three day or one week binge.
I mean technically and strictly speaking, yes it's 1 year clean and sober, but really its 2 1/2 years , because without that one night he had still been living clean and sover 1 1/2 years, and as i said he didn't slip back into any of his previous habbits and stayed on the straight and narrow, so it was just a stutter step !

Ya that's how I felt too. I haven't gone to AA since the first 6 months, so I don't consider the sobriety dates as important. 2 1/2 years....give or take a day hehe.
AA worked good for me at first, but it gets depressing and I'd rather do fun things than go to those meetings. I still attend the occasional cake night for friends sobriety dates, but other than that I don't need it. Some people need AA/NA because of the social aspect.....because they don't have much of a social life after becoming sober considering its almost impossible to hang out with the friends you used with once you're sober. So people use AA to replace their former social life. I found new friends in university who don't have addiction issues, so I found a way to be social and avoid having to go to AA to socialize. The key for me was having to let go of my best friends who I drank, snorted, toked, and dropped with for 16 years ......it's hard to do and you have to fill the void which is hard. So AA replaces your friends good at first, until you can find new people who don't use.

i agree, your right, at the end of a day, yes a relapse is a relapse.
but one day in comparison to 2 1/2 years is nothing. it's more inspirational as well for him to be able to say 2 1/2 years as well.
look at it this way, he was 99.863% sober for 2 1/2 years.
and yeah Irish, thats the thing that i think i'm going to struggle with, is having to leave my group of friends if it came down to that. because i've noticed for me atleast it is REALLY difficult to hangout with mates who are drinking or taking drugs i used to take, when im quitting and can't take any. it's too much temptation sometimes. so the best thing is to really just not hangout with them, but then as you said, that leaves the void in ones social life. i guess thats why i've continued to stay using or drinking , because i enjoy it and i have a good time with the people around me.

Thats ok Shadyy I know I should say 1 year sober, but I hate to leave out the 1.5 years before the relapse. I'll try to mention the relapse when I talk about it. I usually avoid talking about addiction on shroomery, it's a touchy subject, and everyone has different opinions. I'm going to just step back and let you guys get back to the discussion. Peace!

Everyone's entitled to an opinion. For me personally I was 6 months sober and decided to have "a drink" and ended up going on a 3 month poly-drug bender.

Hellz yea, after a heavy trip, the receding effect when you come down often gives a mood like its Christmas and Santa is on his way!

I wasn't trying to discourage you.
Regardless of how long it's been, you should be proud as shit.

True, but they say relapse is part of recovery.
