It's always in the back of the mind. Of course the longest I ever went without was about 6 months, and although I didnt think about it ALL the time if I saw a certain TV show or someone drinking a certain kinda beer or smelled some dank Id think "gee I could go for that".

Biggest fear of sobriety is being bored, and not being able to go as many days as I wanted to0, then feeling guilty.

You're doing it wrong.

I'm not afraid of sobriety really. I'm sober 82% of the time.
But never being able to have an escape from sobriety would kinda suck.

It's like A Scanner Darkly in the end, too much of a good thing and all that.

It was fun at first but when it gets to the point of consuming 6-12 substances a day and not having a sober moment for a few years its a little excessive and wears away on the sanity.

Goes away after a while, but can come back suddenly.  I haven't had an alcohol or cocaine craving at all, even when we found a flap of coke in the sober house I was living in.  The only craving I've had.. was for a cigarette one day about 5 months after quitting smoking when I was talking to someone while they smoked.  I wanted so badly to ask them for one, but decided to just tell them I needed to go instead.  I also drank a year after getting sober, just to see if I could do it because I had never been sober before and wanted to see if I was just a binge drinker or a real alcoholic.  I drank the whole bottle, drove downtown and found some people with weed, they came back to my condo and we got drunk and stoned.  I had a hangover for 2+ days that was one of the worst hangovers ever.  So if you count that I've been sober a year, but 2 and a half if you don't count it.

But anyways, to get to your question, it does go away completely.  I never think about drinking or smoking weed like I did daily for 16 years...I just look forward to getting a degree at university and moving on with my life.

It's crazy how smart we are when we get sober and put all the focus we had on drugs and partying into education.

The thoughts go away after a year or two.  You go through a period of using dreams too where you're getting drunk or stoned in your dreams.  That passes as well.

For me, if I do drugs again or drink, I start where I left off doing tons of it and drinking bottles endlessly.  I'd probably kill myself pretty quick.

Rehab was intense, 3 people died including a friend I had made who's liver died one night about a month into rehab.  It was one of the most intense experiences being in that place.  I was put in a group with a homicide cop who was a drunk, the head doctor of an ER who was using morphine injections, and 3 soldiers from Afghanistan who had PTSD and were drinking to kill the pain......so it was fucking intense.  I have no idea why they put me in that group but it was fucked up hahaha.....totally turned me around.  I used drugs and alcohol to cover up anxiety and pain from a shitty childhood.  I had to come to terms with my childhood beatings, and deal with anxiety with meditation etc rather than grabbing a bottle.

Anyways, I could go on forever about this subject.  I think if you're truly happy in life being stoned, then its fine, but if you're using drugs and alcohol to kill emotional or physical pain, it's just going to get worse.  Also, if you can't control it, you need to learn to or quit before its too late.

One of my buds was shot a dozen times in the head 2 weeks out of rehab, everyone believes if was due to debts he owed dealers.  He hinted a few times in rehab that he owed some serious dudes money.

the important thing is that you've broken the habbit and have been living clean for 2 1/2 years. who cares if you had a one day relapse. you didn't fall back into it, and so i'd count it as 2 1/2 years sober isntead of just 1.

i don't know specifically, but i'm more inclined to not count a one day slip up as opposed to a three day or one week binge.

I mean technically and strictly speaking, yes it's 1 year clean and sober, but really its 2 1/2 years , because without that one night he had still been living clean and sover 1 1/2 years, and as i said he didn't slip back into any of his previous habbits and stayed on the straight and narrow, so it was just a stutter step !

everytime I try to "test the waters" with a drink or two I end up going on a bender...next time i might not come back so it's better not to chance it.

Ya that's how I felt too.  I haven't gone to AA since the first 6 months, so I don't consider the sobriety dates as important.  2 1/2 years....give or take a day hehe.

AA worked good for me at first, but it gets depressing and I'd rather do fun things than go to those meetings.  I still attend the occasional cake night for friends sobriety dates, but other than that I don't need it.  Some people need AA/NA because of the social aspect.....because they don't have much of a social life after becoming sober considering its almost impossible to hang out with the friends you used with once you're sober.  So people use AA to replace their former social life. I found new friends in university who don't have addiction issues, so I found a way to be social and avoid having to go to AA to socialize.  The key for me was having to let go of my best friends who I drank, snorted, toked, and dropped with for 16 years ......it's hard to do and you have to fill the void which is hard.  So AA replaces your friends good at first, until you can find new people who don't use.

i agree, your right, at the end of a day, yes a relapse is a relapse.

but one day in comparison to 2 1/2 years is nothing. it's more inspirational as well for him to be able to say 2 1/2 years as well.

look at it this way, he was 99.863% sober for 2 1/2 years.

and yeah Irish, thats the thing that i think i'm going to struggle with, is having to leave my group of friends if it came down to that. because i've noticed for me atleast it is REALLY difficult to hangout with mates who are drinking or taking drugs i used to take, when im quitting and can't take any. it's too much temptation sometimes. so the best thing is to really just not hangout with them, but then as you said, that leaves the void in ones social life. i guess thats why i've continued to stay using or drinking , because i enjoy it and i have a good time with the people around me.

Ya I don't care really either way.  I doubt I'll ever drink again so I'm not concerned about my exact sobriety time.
