Fresh mushrooms smell like fresh mushrooms. Normally your local produce store will sell these products in the fresh produce section.

I've been there and done this one. It won't be a total waste of your time. Just keep it separate from the rest, (if doing more than one tub). The contamination is present and will be there. If you have the right ratios and the perfect substrate, you'll get a less than decent first flush but no second, third or even fourth flush. I experimented with it and won't do it again. not worth the time, effort and money. I would start fresh.

Start fresh completely? I have 16 other uncontaminated jars atm, with two SGFC's ready to go. You don't mean to say my entire batch is compromised do you? That would be disappointing to say the least.

No Silly! If you have 16 other uncontaminated jars than just toss that one. I didn't realize that you had all those others. Believe me, one tossed jar won't make or break a grow in the grand scheme of things. Include that jar and you will have lost the yield potential of all the other jars. Get rid of it! Not worth the risk or time or money. Bottom line.

I've thrown out one already the first day I saw the green, this second one I posted a picture of, and a third appeared but the mycelium appeared to eat it up. Both Jar #2 and #3 are isolated and under observance. I began with 11 of that strain, so 8 left that appear totally healthy.

I'm confused if it's not mold what is it?
Safe to birth with the rest once the mycelium covers it up?

What ever this green thing is, it's not trich or any contam i know. If this green spot dont grow or spread, it's nothing to worry. Keep an eye on it. But in doubt:better save then sorry! Tossing one jar is easy, loosing all jars hurts real bad.

Yea if it doesn't grow then I'd use it. You could always use it outside if your too concerned about it

Here's the litmus test for any suspected contamination.
Trich creates toxins which weakens the mycelial network, and thus your strain's hold on the substrate. It's always localized to the point of contamination. You could circle the spot on the outside of the jar, wait until it's fully colonized, birth it, then poke that spot with your finger (under running water of course). If it's softer and collapses, you've got a contam. If it's just as corky as the rest of the cake, you're fine.
Pretty much any contam will soften the cake, but trich is especially nasty about it.

I would say wait and smell them. A lot of molds and mushrooms have their own smell. Worst case, you could set up a small grow chamber for 2 cakes and wait and see.
Beautiful mycelium!

just do what your doing. and wait till its 100%. i would leave it in the jar till you see pins, thank birth/dunk and put in the FC. watch it close and u will be good. u can at least get one flush from it and trash it. do what u feel is best bro. me if u need anything if you see green after you put it in the FC get rid of it, it cant be saved.

Fruiting a contaminated cake is not a problem really, like the link at the top for a RR response says, they are safe to eat. BUT, if they are contaminated and you fruit them you may compromise your grow area. If you have any doubts and you do fruit them bleach bomb your area after harvest. From all of the reading I have done lately that would be my chosen course of action. I hope you have a good uncontaminated grow though.
