casing without vermiculite
    #14529777 - 05/29/11 08:09 AM (12 years, 9 months ago)

hello there. I'm experimenting with casing materials.  Vermiculite is not available here. What i have now is hydrated lime for ph control, soil and perlite and H2o2 to prevent contamination. I'm thinking of the following casing composition :
10part peat
3 part perlite
1/4 part hydrated lime

and sometimes before pinning starts gonna sprinkle some 1:10 H2O2/water to moist the casing surface and prevent contamination.
my question is that will be good or have to get some additional stuff? Is that method good? can't get vermiculite here the people did not heard about it at all. I'm in a village and have nothing here but straw, hay and cowshit... yaay...
thank you very much if somebody gonna reply.

no perlite. it serves no purpose in a casing. you want verm to hold moisture, perlite will not do it.

you can case with just peat if you want. it would be better to mix in verm with it tho.

you can try casing with "Miracle Grow Moisture Control". Its cheap at home depot and works as a casing. or jiffy mix.

here have no access to vermiculite. only peat. i know verm would be the best the hope the peat gonna be good. the perlite would served as something that gives air to the myc and to hold a little moisture. I was reading a lot about it in forums but did not find good info. but thanks the info!

The reason you can't find anything on it is because its basically uesless in a casing as shroomiin stated, leave it out and order some verm online or use the Jiffy mix

the perlite would not hold any moisture. It only works in a fruiting chamber because of the large amount of surface area the water can evaporate off of. mixing it with other stuff would defeat this purpose making it useless.

Depending on what youre trying to do, casing isnt even necessary. but you would do okay using just peat, or jiffy mix, or MGMC.

thank you very much you have been very helpful! in an other city they sell vermiculite in a growshop but a bit expensive. I think people overmystificate the growing of weed and shroom and they sell these things for an unreal high price just because it is from a growshop. btw i have some jiffy pellets and they have extremely good water hold capacity but i think it has some nutrients in it which is unnecessary and maybe the mycelium gonna run over it which i dont really want. I dont want the casing to be colonized. what do you think? maybe i mix some of them with the peat? i have 4 fully colonized trays and i'm waiting for the pins to late case them and i have 4 monobins but those are halfcolonized. maybe i could experiment with the trays and get the vermiculite for the bins and do a 50/50 peat/verm casing.

And one more question. I have both hay and straw and i inoculated them with a multiculture birdseed spawn and the following happened : when it was fully colonized i saw that it was uniformly rhizomorphical. Maybe the straw and hay and the cowshit and their beneficial bacterias cause them growing so rhizomorph? I'm very curious of the fruits. gonna post some pictures of them when it is ready to harvest.
