You probably slept on it wrong which will cause pain and stiffness for a couple of days. I've done this numerous times before. I've also had similar issues when sleeping on friends' fold out couches/beds. A few days later and I was fine.

Yes, you most likely slept on it wrong. Just try to stretch it out gently and relax. If you have the time/money/friend a massage would help bring it back to normal faster.
My neck cracks and gets tight because of a vertebrae in my back which is hindered in its movement, having a massage always helps it out lots.

He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest -- a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and affection for a few persons nearest us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole nature in its beauty. Nobody is able to achieve this completely but striving for such achievement is, in itself, a part of the liberation and a foundation for inner security." Albert Einstein

Sounds to me like a muscle spasm. The exact same thing happened to me when I was a kid. I was playing soccer, and turned my head to follow the ball when all of a sudden I heard a loud pop/crack sound. For 3-4 days, I could not lift my head off of my left shoulder without extreme pain. I went to the doctor and he diagnosed it as a muscle spasm, and gave me a prescription for Valium...

From Wikipedia:
"Torticollis, or wryneck, is a stiff neck associated with muscle spasm, classically causing lateral flexion contracture of the cervical spine musculature (a condition in which the head is tilted to one side). The muscles affected are principally those supplied by the spinal accessory nerve."
That sounds exactly like what I had. The doctor just told me is was a muscle spasm though, and never mentioned that term...

Awesome story sounds like some pretty shitty luck

this is the worse!
Here is what i do and gradually it will get better , roll your head around 360 degrees even where it hurts eventually it will start hurting less and less also move your head side to side regardless of the pain slowly and carefully obviously though

Yup! this is exactly what I've been doing and it helps so much. Quote:

I've had clients with torticollis, and they cannot move their head from looking up and left/right. I mean CAN NOT move it.
Not like 'oh it hurts, I cant move it', but there is literally no way it will move.
You probably have a trigger point in your Splenius Capitus/cervicus. Put your hand on the occipital protuberance(that lump on the back of your head) and then put your fingers on the ligamentum nuchae(that little valley in the center of the back of your upper neck under the skull, over the spine)
On either side of that little ridge, it will probable feel like there is a marble in there. Find the most intense spot, and do 8-12 light, inch long mini strokes over it with a finger, IN THE SAME DIRECTION. You want to microstretch the fibers in the same direction for muscular release, and doing it in the same direction will allow the waste fluid to flow out and fresh blood to come in. A knot is like a spongue that's slightly squeezed and holds whatever garbage is in there without allowing fresh fluids in
Repeat this about 3 times thru out the day. It will totally seem underwhelming and useless, but this is necessary. Over stretching it can actually cause more pain and disfunction. When you have a shortened muscle and try to maintain regular movement, then other muscles(antagonists and synergists) have to compensate for it, making them work in ways they have never worked before, and then THEY get fucked up. Target the specific muscle and treat it before stretching.
After that, you should work on you Sternocleidomastoid(that log on muscle on the front/sides of your neck.) IT attaches to the mastoid(lump of bone behind the ear) and to the collarbone slightly off from the center, and then to that little divit in the center of the collar bones where it's attached to the sternum. Start at the bottom and gently squeeze inch by inch up to the skull. GENTLY. The muscle itself has 2 heads, and you may have to feel a little deeper for the part that reaches the clavicle(collarbone)
PROTIP: This muscle is also the number 1 culprit for hangover headaches. These are thick fuckers that hold a lot of toxins. Next time you wake up hung over with a headache, repeat the gentle squeezes, inch by inch through the length of it. generally, the closer to the head you get, the more it hurts. Aim for a pain level of like 6-8, the kind of pain you can relax into.

Felt a loud pop, now Ive got excruciating pain turning my head, moving my arm certain ways, cant even shower. Head is permanently tilted to the right. How long does it take to subside? I cant afford to miss a week or work and still pay my bills.

Are you otherwise mobile without the pain? That doesn't sound like you just slept on it wrong and the muscle is stiff. Or at least not a normal case of that.
Go see a doctor.

I googled it, oddly the shroomery popped up in one of the answers and I remembered posting on here quite a bit a few years ago. The consensus seems to be that it is a muscle spasm/pulled muscle, that is particularly painful. I got a letter over a year ago saying that Id be assigned a doctor by my insurance provider if I didnt pick one, so I waited around for an assignment letter but never got one, because I feel too overwhlemed by choices to pick a doctor myself.

I know that feel. You can call your insurance and ask.
If it is a muscle spasm you should be able to gently rub it out in a few days.

Im opting for an urgent care clinic. I dont feel its severe enough for an ER but I feel its too severe to wait for a month to get assigned a doctors appointment.

I had something similar happen. Don't recall a pop or anything but woke up and I couldn't move my head the slightest and was stuck tilted because of the excruciating pain. I ended up buying a bunch of oxy and within an hour that cleared it right up. I can't imagine having to deal with that again especially without a quick fix as I had.
