Yeah under certain conditions peres does that.. I find miss K's portulaca to have a shape similar to a young conifer-like tree, especially with the needle like leaves..
I think it's portulaca grandiflora that is a very popular houseplant by the way
On another note, not sure how many caudiciform plants and trees belong to the succulent family or if this thread is meant to include succulents in the first place... but I wonder how to best get the caudex to grow thick.
Also, is there a way to get a plant to branch at a certain place without cutting it back a lot? Or would that only happen when doing weird stuff like applying hormones? Sometimes a plant seems to want to branch where a wound occurs but I don't know how to exploit that.

So I was at the dome heapo and found these cacti labeled Pachycereus pringlei 'False Saguaro'. Now I was under the impression those were illegal in the US so I bought three. Was hoping you guy could confirm without a flower. If they were cheaper I would have bought all eight.

I tried buying some years ago when I bought my astrophytums, ariocarpus and other entheogenic cacti, the guy said they were illegal

Thanks, Mallacht. I should really upgrade. That piece of fabric is quickly disintegrating and it's hard to find an angle without getting ripped background behind the plant...

It's hard to tell False Saguaro apart from Saguaro when they're small like that. But one difference that shows up is that the new spines emerging at the growth tips on the P. pringlei are often red in color, which you don't see with Saguaros.
I never heard of a ban on P. pringlei. But I have heard that they fall over a lot more often than Saguaros when grown with irrigation, which is one reason why the Saguaros are more popular. But P. pringlei makes a beautiful specimen plant when full sized and supposedly it also grows a lot faster than Saguaros.

Wonderful! I'm sad to be getting rid of mine after like 3 years but we are moving. Only my queen of the night cactus will be making the trip down south. She will love it though weather wise.

Indeed, elephant cactus "giant cardon" grows much faster, but it starts from bigger seeds as well

saguaro seedlings:

I am wondering if saguaro is slower than peyote

Sulcorebutia?

Apparently, but I'm not very good at identifying these (although I have a lot of species). Maybe something close to S. mentosa or S. steinbachii? (I also believe there are more names than actual species varieties, but what do I know?)

Thanks. I saw some of your spectacular pictures of these and it grew my interest in this species.
I have had these for awhile and have been waiting for them to flower to help me ID but i am still finding it quite difficult.
The one above was just labeled Ernestii.
This one was labeled Sulcorebutia rojasii which looks right when i look up pictures. But i noticed under the same name a cactus very similar to this one came up.
Which i brought from a market thinking it was a Sulcorebutia but was called Rebutia ferox pulvimosa which yields no results when searched.

There is a Rebutia pulvinosa, they are orange flowered though. What spines on that one you have there! Very ferox indeed!
