Love that blueish tone. There is another "variety", so to speak, that has stiffer spines and is super easy to flower.

That's badass ferrel. So that's a new shoot and not a flower bud?

It may be too soon to tell, but I'd say shoot. Plus, those papery spined forms are notoriously stubborn when it comes to flower...

It's definitely a new shoot, I've got dozens of these guys growing in my greenhouse with new growth happening on each and every one of them. They look just like ferrel's pic. I have seen the curly spine version as well as the stiff and straight spine version both look very impressive when they grow large. These all came from one single small pot that I bought from a big box store a year or two ago, I forget how long it's been now. Needless to say they root and propagate at lightning fast speeds for a cactus.

Cool. Thanks SuperD. I've always liked them but for some reason never added one to the collection.

I've always loved Tephrocactus too... One of the best things about them is the spines are literally like paper so no getting shanked working with them!
Nope, definitely just an offshoot buddy. The pups come out a different color at first. Just look at all of those ones that SuperD posted.

Shanked. They got small ones but nothing like a horse crippler cactus.

Ferrel, any chance of seeing the entire spineless myrtillo monstrose? Yours looks absolutely huge and I'm glad to see it pupped despite it seeming to lack areoles. I picked up a small graft of one and I noticed some spines forming at the top where new growth occurs but the majority of the body is spineless.
