Such a fine specimen, I had cactus envy. So here's mine:

Also, Mammillaria huitzilopochtli. The pic doesn't do it justice, this thing is a gem.

These are lovely. I started some from seed this year, hoping for some with long black central spines.

Sir, you have genital warts!
What a bad ass cactus! How old is it?

Hmm, couldn't say. It has been with me for a few seasons, this is the first pup to emerge since I've had it.

So I've had a 12"x5" Pedro cutting since January. I had a second section that was a middle cut that rotted on me really fast. I've been super intimidated to put this guy in soil cuz I don't wanna lose it, so I've got it in a cardboard box in the bed of my truck (campershell) to keep it warm, dry and dark. It's lost a bit of color and is slightly yellowish. How can I entice it to root. It'd crush me if it rots.

Don't you just need to put it in some soil? Cover one part, leave the other part exposed to light?

Lol yeah, but I'm capable of screwing it up
Does sand work better or what would be the best mix? Coir I'm sure would hold too much moisture which I believe was the problem the first time.

Wait for somebody more experienced to chime in. but, I find coir/perlite to be amazingly light and airy. Releases water just fine for me. But this is my first season using it, and my first season with special cactus. In the past it was regular cactus in regular cactus soil.

karode has a good write-up on rooting Trichocereus here. Use a dried soil mix, it doesn't need moisture until it has roots else you are just encouraging it to rot.

Where'd you find those little suckers?!?!?
@ Mostly, thanks for the link, I put that trich in the pot yesterday and did my best to only put water down at the bottom of the pot, to try to simulate low ground water. But nothing in the range the trich is in.

Well, someone who isn't me got them in a trade from a friend of a friend. Or so I heard.
Little one is on its own roots, the big one is a button which is being rooted now. It's on coir/perlite/limestone with added desert sand and a bit of pumice.

remember that those root when its hot. and out of sunlight. it will get shrunken bad but thats when you know it will have roots.
just set on soil and check for root buds every 1 and a 1/2 weeks.
most will tell you that a normal taproot will never appear. after 3 years that will not be the case.
that is just my experience.
with those lovelies Doc.

no darkness. why would one think this?
outside in the shade with 95F temps is good.
like i said they will root but skinny as fuck and terrible looking. but roots emerge then water it good. it will fatten up nicely to previous looks.
