I don't see why this bill is necessary when aggrieved copyright holders already can and should sue the living shit out of copyright violators.

Yeah? And how often do they win?
How often do you see massive torrent sites like demonoid go down for copy infringement?

Yeah they're in montenegro now I think? If this bill passes the US can shut down the DNS servers, and block all requests and searches of blacklisted material - so it may be if you live in the US you would not be able to access the site.

Napster got fucked because they hosted copyrighted material on their site, torrent sites don't do that at all so they have a pretty good case legally.

So the bottom line is either the government gets to decide how content flows online or the ISP gets to decide, right?
"Net Neutrality" means the government is the arbiter. Doesn't sound like such hot shit to me.
"Net Neutrality" is just another appeal to state control for the good of the common idiot who can't look out for himself, ie: pay or develop an ISP that does what he wants.
People see the words "Net Neutrality" and think that must be a great thing and damn "them" for trying to destroy "net neutrality". But really, anyone rallying for "net neutrality" is ultimately rallying for federal regulation of ISP's. Whether that's good or bad depends on your philosophy but there are problems either way. What's worse, big ISP's or big gubmint?

No the files are hosted in a distributed way across everyone who 'seeds' them while connected to the network

I dont know the details of the net neutrality act but by that reasoning the constitution is just another way for the feds to control us too. It seems to me a little ground rules arent such a bad thing as long as they are aimed at protecting the freedom of the internets. And in that regard gubmentz Is better than individual isp's to be making that call.

No, the constitution is to control the feds. That's its central purpose. The tenth amendment sums it up nicely, by declaring that all powers not expressly reserved to the feds belong to the states and the people, ie: ISP's.
edit: but I'm sure the interstate commerce clause will be seized upon yet again...

Ya i know it wasnt the best comparison but to my understanding net neutrality was meant to make sure isp's keep the internet 'neutral' and unrestricted so that there is no monopolies developing. Which in itself is a good thing. What other powers it puts into the hands of the feds i dunno.
I think what we really need is another amendment to the constitution itself that deals specifically with unrestricted internet.

It's technically infeasible if not impossible to "censor the internet" anyway. Encryption is becoming so standardized that it will be impossible to tell one type of traffic from another and NO WAY are they going to stop EVERYONE from communicating AT ALL. When everyone has something to lose, it won't happen.

Why would they need to look at traffic when all they have to do is send in a request to all the isp's and have them filter out specific server ip's?
