Genetically Modified foods linked to organ failure in rats
    #14526756 - 05/28/11 03:24 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Quote:

In a study released by the International Journal of Biological Sciences, analyzing the effects of genetically modified foods on mammalian health, researchers found that agricultural giant Monsanto's GM corn is linked to organ damage in rats.

In the conclusion of the IJBS study, researchers wrote:
"Effects were mostly concentrated in kidney and liver function, the two major diet detoxification organs, but in detail differed with each GM type. In addition, some effects on heart, adrenal, spleen and blood cells were also frequently noted. As there normally exists sex differences in liver and kidney metabolism, the highly statistically significant disturbances in the function of these organs, seen between male and female rats, cannot be dismissed as biologically insignificant as has been proposed by others. We therefore conclude that our data strongly suggests that these GM maize varieties induce a state of hepatorenal toxicity....These substances have never before been an integral part of the human or animal diet and therefore their health consequences for those who consume them, especially over long time periods are currently unknown."

Monsanto has immediately responded to the study, stating that the research is "based on faulty analytical methods and reasoning and do not call into question the safety findings for these products."

No surprise Monsanto is calling into question the study's validity. I just hope more research from many different labs will be done to test this claim, and that all Genetically Modified Organisms, and any products that use GMOs in their ingredients, will have to be labelled as such.

Luckily, 14 states (New York, California, Oregon, to name a few) are considering a bill that would make GMO labeling mandatory - the bill is in response to GM salmon that is about to hit the market, but some states are only considering making GM animals be labelled, not all foods that contain GMOs. The big issue isn't whether it's healthy to eat but how it could fuck up the planet's genetics.  Terminator seeds on the winds?  And how would a jellyfish and a tomato ever make it happen in the wild or on a farm?

All the genetic tinkering makes me more than a little uneasy. They'd better be careful or they're going to wind up with something they definitely do not want.

i'm so glad you brought up the environmental aspect of GMOs!

if i remember "Food, Inc" correctly, Monsanto can sue farmers whose crops have been pollenized by GMOs. Because Monsanto has patented their transgenic seeds, any plant that produces those seeds is theirs.

this video gives a brief history of insecticides and explains how Monsanto introduces round-up, as well as viral and bacterial DNA, into their food products.. And at the end, it names all the Monsanto-affiliated persons who work in the Food sector of the government.

and this video shows the effects of corn plants in Mexico that've been pollenated by GM corn in America.

This is THE real major ecological issue of today, right now, the seeds these fuckers have already put on the winds.  Not fucking, yer carbon footprint or the recent population of Polar bears at the North Pole.  THIS.  Monsanto, RoundUp.  Corruption of species worldwide.  Complete assrape of cultivators and their cultivars of tens of thousands of years and the heirloom genetics of the planet itself potentially.  These fucks have no idea of the complete implications and no recourse even at this point, yet they've pushed their way forward for a few decades now and nobody even is really aware of the issue, but they've heard all about climate change and scumbag savior of humanity al gore, to whose list of sins you can add helping clear the way for Monsanto and the whole G.M. push.

That last video about Mexican corn is great.  Everyone should watch it.  Everyone should be furious.
