Oyster on coir
    #14526457 - 05/28/11 01:23 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

The other day, after pasteurizing and inoculating straw, I had some spawn left in a jar and decided to run a small experiment: feed coir to some P. ostreatus. Straight coir, in this little 4x5x6 tub.

Today it's fully colonized. I'm going to poke a few holes in the sides and see if she'll fruit. So far, I haven't heard of oysters fruiting on straight coir, so I'm interested to find out. Any predictions?

Mushrooms! Im guessing oysters are agressive enough to fruit on coir :pipesmoke:

Thanks for the good vibes guys! We'll see real soon... I just gave them air, so I'll be looking for primordia from here. I'll post photos if all goes well!

Here's a couple fruiting from a jar of fine Douglas fir sawdust, cased with a bit of coir to keep the sawdust from drying out. As an experiment, I didn't even pasteurize the sawdust (but in the case of the coir, I did). The coir colonized far faster than the sawdust!

Is that a quart jar? very cool  how long did the sawdust take to colonize?

Actually I had some stove pellets kicking around. I could tell by the smell they were Douglas fir. I'd been doing some agar work, passing sectors of agar to grain, then I took what was left in the petri dish and put it in the quart jar of sawdust.

It took between two and three weeks, but bear in mind it was growing from agar at the top of the jar to the bottom. There was no way to shake, so I just had to wait. Actually, now I wonder which would colonize faster: a mini-tub of coir, versus sawdust, inoculated by grain. Maybe I"ll do an experiment some time soon.

The proof is in! Oysters will fruit on straight coir. And surprise, surprise: they taste great.

Took this photo tonight.
