DIY 3D Printer

So, I've got two huge projects that I want to do at this time. One is kind of a money sink (I'm totaling about $120) and one is a huge one (around $600).
1. Grow some shitakies (nothing to do with this particular thread, but thats why I am on this part of the interbutts)
and...
2. A 3D printer. You know, a printer that makes 3d things. Like, action figures, little statues, parts for other things, etc.
I'm thinking about going down this route: http://reprap.org/wiki/Main_Page
Yay for open source things! The printer is going to cost me some money... But the cool thing about it? It can basically print ITSELF. Its self replicating. Not fully self replicating... Yet. But it seems the reprap community is working to make it to where the Repraps are able to completely reproduce their selves - metal and all.
So, thoughts?

depending on how small you're willing to o with this the majority of your parts can come from flatbed scanners, I was considering building a large cad/cam router for the same sort of purposes but it would need to be large enough to handle 5'x10' sheet stock so the scanners arent in my future

I read the link, but still am a little confused, what exactly does it print? do you have to feed it plastic and it makes cut outs? is it like a plastic cnc machine?

it's more or less a 3d prototyping machine, makes plastic parts, feeds by a plastic 'wire' spool, works somewhat like a hot glue gun

Well will you make your machine make another and i would but it off of ya,- Plastic hot glue gun machine sounds fun, Does it work with 3-d auto cad?
And how accurate is the printing? down to .1 inches Or better? Or would the part still need to be machined,to make the part interchangeable. Say like a cog on an model helicopter.

A friend in my old bowling league made his own 3D printer. He bought some parts from an defunct printer and used their current 3D printer to make the rest. The homemade one was a little sloppy... ie the grid was not the same depending which way it was moving... but it was good enough for some things.
