has anyone actually found Conocybe smithii in a bog??

so this has always rubbed me the wrong way. this species has been historically know as the active bog conocybe. yet every observation i have seen in he last couple years has not come from a bog. either grass in a yard like paradise or in a graveyard like wisco . and wasnt triggers from bare dirt??
i am asking this as i want to spray some smithii spores in the historical habitat... a bog. but i am a bit unclear on what a bog is . is it just low wet land where skunk cabbage grows? because i have tons of area like that i could try . i beleive they call them sphagnum bogs here, so would the sphagnum moss be the right stuff to spray ?
thanks in advance

Great post. I made a similar one a couple years back. I've never seen one come from a bog either. I've searched a few local sphagnum bogs...nothing. A bog is a specific type of wetland where layers of dead mosses accumulate creating an acidic environment. When the layer floats on top of the water; that's a quaking bog. I don't think where Skunk Cabbage grows qualifies as a bog. Good luck with your experiment.
I found some mushrooms growing on a beaver dam today.

so the enviroment where skunk cabbage grows isnt actually a bog? bogs are where they harvest peat right?
i wonder if there is 1 specific bog that C smithii likes. this is going to take a bit of time.
what kind of plants thrive in a bog? so i am looking for plants that thrive in an acidic enviroment?

I'm not positive because your western skunks are different than our eastern skunks. Yes, a bog by definition is an acidic environment with layers of dead organic matter; usually moss-like sphagnum. Think blueberries or cranberries... that type of environment.

Another key feature that differentiates bogs from other wetland types is that a a bog used to be a lake. Think of the vegetation growing around the perimeter of an undisturbed lake, growing and dying year after year. In time....usually lots of time.....the shore area gets just dry enough for certain tree species to grow there. Up in this part of the world, you'd be talking things like tamarack and black spruce. Eventually, these trees too die, tip over, and contribute their mass to the spongy situation that is being created. Eventually, the process goes all the way to bog....a very wet, often though not always acidic environment with rather unique plant species present.
As to the actual quest you're on, I know too little about the mushroom itself to offer anything more.

That was kinda the point of my old post...Everything that the Audubon Guide says about the mushroom can't really be trusted. Including the habitat. Bogs are great places to hunt but if I were looking for C. smithii, I would look in grassy areas like lawns and cemeteries.

so what ,gary shit the bed on that species or what? see C smithii is not documented in B.C. and if you find an active Conocybe in the grass here, its the land of C cyanopus. so thats why i was hoping to be able to differeniate the 2 by habitat. but if that book is wrong then who knows.
