I've read how some strains used today were made with a certain strain that was difficult to colonize/germinate, and they used rattlesnake venom to break down the cell walls and release genetic material. Often, the grower would mix it with another strain to pick up that released genetic material, which would then grow.
This is what RR did to revive redboy from a print over ten years old.

I've never been able to get ahold of real psilocybin mushrooms, and I've decided I'd like to grow my own. The easiest tek I've found so far is the Mad Bag Tek. Basically everything is already done in a bag, except for the inoculation. It's about $8 for a 2lb pag + S&H. inoculate, chuck in the closet. Very user friendly, ya dig? It's a Rye Grain bag that you can inoculate, grow the substrate, and fruit in(I've been doing my research..lol) But, my dilemma is what strain to grow! I'd like to grow some decently potent shrooms, that grow fast, big yields, and provide a nice trip to enjoy with friends in nature. I know cubes are cubes are cubes, but I see so many B+, Ecuadorian, Hawaiian's, Thai-Pink Buffalo's, etc. What's the difference, and which is the most low maintenance, fastest grow, biggest yield, and trip I'm looking for? Also, what are good vendors? I've heard of Ralphsters Spores, and Spores101. Thank you fellow shroomer's in advance for your help! If I'm allowed to post links, I'll post them to show you what Mad Bag's are.

fruiting straight off grains is mediocre
you'll have better luck spawning that mad bag to a COIR BUCKET TEK.

(see link in sig)
edit: i'll explain more.
the purpose of grains is because of the many inoculation points.
if you want to fruit off what you inoculate, you'll want to buy the BRF substrate, or make your own.
brf/verm IS more nutritious than rye grain. but for spawning to coir or manure, rye grain is FAR superior.
so it just depends on how much final substrate you want to end up with, a bag of mushrooms or a tub.

You should read the Strain Thread for semi-definitive answers on all of these questions.

I usually go with eq's due to their consistency, beauty, and the fact they are well domesticated.
Thinking of trying something new.
Perhaps S.A.T. or Dancing Tiger China. Anyone have experience with these?

So how would I go about doing a transfer from a Mad Bag to a Coir Bucket? What's the cost, and the yield? I've recently acquired some PES Hawaiian, and PES Tampanesis from about 20 years ago. Are they still viable spores? They're on AGAR and in petri dishes. They look pretty damn clean too.

Search through it all for the strains you're after. There are some strains that rise above the rest...
But generally the trip from cubes depends far more on set, setting, and absolute dosage rather than variation between strain.
Setting includes what you think about the likely effects, so suggestibility plays a factor as well. "Ah, Lonesome Fucking Tigers is the best god damn visual cube strain EVER" will get you a different result than "My Special Duty Bogus+ never delivered a single stinkin' visual". And then a big fight ensues between devotees of LFT vs SDB+ and it all gets ugly. BTW that's what THIS thread is for.
Yields are almost entirely dependent on how well you grow and on what substrates and what enviro you supply them with. Yields being the total amount of alkaloids in the flush - not the preponderance of a few large fruits or a whole mess of smaller ones. That's all about pinset and hydration and so on. Tek. Study tek first. Forget about strain. Strain ALMOST doesn't matter.

Sorry to keep bringing me up but this Pf standard classic just like this waiting for it to pin....
My GT went into hyperdrive in colonization, it went from partly filled to over 50% jar was consumed and exponentially increasing . Almost 100% now. A+ albinos have picked up the pace to, all doing well no signs of contam.
the one jar that is not colonizing at ALL is another pf classic

You probably just got some bad genetics. The fact that its not pinning has less to do with it being PF Classic. Could be old spores, or light spore load. Any number of things really. Regardless of the name on the syringe, its still a cubensis and should grow like any other cube.
To the dude asking about yield - no one can answer that one. There are so many variables in play that it is absolutely impossible to put any kind of number on it.

SAT are ridiculously awesome, great trips every time, great potency, aggressive colonizers, good yield, and easy to grow. You will be massively impressed with them

First strain I tried was Ecuador, got some in an FC right now. I inoculated SAT and PESH on 5/26 and both my SAT jars have at least 5% growth, my PESH are just now starting to germinate. The SAT, by far, have been my most ridiculously fast germinators. I'll let you know more as more becomes available.

i've heard of this glass door deal. whats up with that? do the flying saucers start fruiting in the fridge? i do have a box of mulch outside that i inoculated today, but i'm also trying the traditional cake method inside....a mulch cake. 75% hardwood mulch, 25% pine bark mulch a couple handfuls of vermiculite, some perlite, and i dumped the rest of my corn grits in the mix which wasn't much.

If you live a desert (even a coastal one like me) then some mechanism to maintain the lower temps that stimulate fruiting would been to be used.
Good luck,

OK this is great information. I have done plenty of research on the TEK i will be using and haven't really paid that much attention to what "strain" i will be using. I had an idea but figured i would do that research last.
This morning I thought I would order my spore syringes before work. I was just going to hop on the forum for a quick run down. Well, now I'm going to be late. I already let my boss know that I had something important to do this morning and would be late.
I pretty much understand that cubes are cubes. there isn't one "strain" that is really better than another. It's not like growing weed or anything. Your technique for cultivation is more important than the "strain" you use. If you don't have the proper requirements for growing than it won't matter what strain you use.
for now I'm going with the PF TEK and i'll try one syringe of golden teacher and one syringe of B+. I'm more concerned with getting everything right with the TEK than what "strain" I use.

I was wondering what everyones experience has been when growing SyzyGy?
I have three seperate strains going right now. I have read RR replying to strain related threads Saying many times that Strains are just Fancy names intended to make The vendors product more markatable.
I recently started a run from 3 Original spore syringes.
1- Treasure Coast 1-B+ 1-SyZyGy
My choice was a standard BRF tek starting with 24 jars
EVERY single SyZyGy jar was exploding with rhizos within the first 3 days. These jars are all around 45% colonized.
B+ and tc's displayed fluffy growth and germination 2 days later than the SyGyZy or whatevers.
I guess what I am trying to say I no longer believe that all cube strain perform the same when working from spores I have grown enough cubes now to notice how one strain usually out performs the others given the exact same substrate and circumstances.
