Mostly the hate is because it's us here, that have to deal with the repercussions of bad instructions and shitty chambers. I can't help but notice I'm changing the subject line again, thanks y'all.

If they sold proper instruction I would have gave them double the price they asked. Instead they sent me down shit river with no paddle.
The best instruction I paid for was $8.99 an had the most best video series ever and is a true badass here. I'm sure you can guess the man with a grow!

Whenever I use the PF tek recipe, my cakes end up super wet. Slow to colonize and high contam rate. I no longer use the recipe for water. Much better to have cakes be on the dry side than the wet.
I agree, better on the dry side . . .
Because brown rice flour is so dense (the particle size is so small), substituting half the amount of BRF with ground rye grass seed creates a cake substrate that's light and fluffy and the mycelium runs fast and easy.
Moisture content in the sub doesn't effect in-vitro contamination rate. If the sub is sterile, contamination can't grow.
BTW, I've never played with South American's until recently. Dang, I love how aggressive they are!

I really like the texture of cornmeal cakes. It seems like bacteria can go hog-wild in an environment of anaerobic goo. Shouldn't have any effect on mold though.
For sure, why hydrate the cakes as the maximum amount possible if the dunk is gonna replenish them before fruiting anyway.
--------------------
I spawned some popcorn casings and had double-overlay cause I didn't put enough hydrogen peroxide in my automated aquarium mister. I only got one mushroom so I cut off the head part where the seeds fall from and put it in a jar of LC and sprayed it all over a tin of PF cakes I made with gravel, cardboard, and bisquick in my microwave. I think it will be good cause B+ is so potent. Triggered yet? Only a square would say "a cube is a cube."

midwest growkits are among the worst scam kits.
It's over-priced.
It's not a scam. The product will work and if it gets one person to grow some mushrooms then they've done a good service to the general cause by opening up some minds
I'm not trying to piss in anyones corn flakes here but after prepping substrate for a long time I can't call anyone who's managed (through their marketing technique) to turn substrate prep into a full time job, a scammer.
It may cheapen the art of cultivation and they may use out-dated technique in their pamphlets but it sure as hell isn't a 'scam.'
Midwestgrowkits also benefits the shroomery because their victims come here
When i was introduced to mycology it was with midwest growkits (didnt know shit at the time) and it did indeed push me over to the shroomery (like a "gateway drug" lol) BUT their substrate was actually really good. I remember getting pre-PC'ed PF jars because i didnt have a PC yet and they worked really well. Had all kinds of additives like earthworm castings and bee pollen. For PF cakes they did very, very well. However, the main thing i bought was a growkit and it was so shitty. They sent me basically a "P2P" style tub with a humidifier and like one little hole. I tried it out the way it was supposed to work (came with online instructions) and it didnt do shit. I put the cakes in a shotgun fc the next day and they started exploding.
That is my experience with them. Would trust their subs but not their kits/boxes if i was starting out and searching for pre-sterilized materials. And it is really sort of because of them that i started being part of the shroomery.
That said the only time i had done business with them was years ago, before i joined, and i dont know if their service is any different now, i dont really go there anymore (sponsors :p)

No if you read what i wrote they sold me a totally shitty growkit and that was the main part of the deal. The "Ultimate" kit or whatever. This was a long time ago, when ralphster was still a sponsor and i read somewhere that he endorsed them. Anyway. So i got it and the growkit was terrible, i had to pretty much make it into a shotgun FC. AND when i got this like i said, years ago. But it came with like 18 jars. And those jars did indeed create some awesome cakes. And thats my honest experience right there. I dont know how they expected mushrooms to survive with just a box, one shitty humidifier, and a single hole, though, sounds like C02 death for fungi. So i just made that same 66qt tub into a SGFC and followed shroomery and RR advice and that was my first experience
Btw are those ACTUAL pics of pre-sterilized sub that you recieved? Or like 1-2 months later? Whatever the case is, back THEN at least, 16 of those 18 jars ended up perfect and ive never seen cakes like that. I re-ordered once again right after, just 8 cakes, and from then on just got my own PC. But this is just IME long ago, and i know ralphster went sketchy so maybe they did too. And i dont know how they expected mushrooms to fruit and survive in that horrible 66qt tub, there was pretty much zero FAE

I guess I have a strain question.
If I wanted to isolate some really strong Panaeolus genetics, large fruits for example, would I be able to isolate it down enough to have my own "strain"? Using Workman's method of clone>print for like 8 generations.
Just tried taking clones from a skinny cube fruit, that shit is not easy. So stringy! Then it doesn't want to come off the blade.

If you cool your blade tip in the receiving agar first it won't stick so much.
But I don't see any reason why would couldn't keep cloning and printing big fruits.
Might be easier just to find a big one in the wild and then clone that one.

LOL Fair enough.
But seriously it might easier (possibly cheaper too?) to buy a plane ticket to texas or hawaii and just find them in season at their peak.
Just saying.... all this cloning and isolating can take a while if you're trying to breed out small fruits.

I wouldn't be able to bring back the fruit with me to clone though, getting a spore print from a big fruit only makes it slightly more likely for those genetics to show up, from what I understand.
I'm okay with the time, it's not something I plan on getting done in a few months. It's just going to be to take up the time and keep me doing something mycological(?) to keep me fresh and learning.

I'm trying to breed some cubes with conical caps. Several generations of printing and MS growing from ideal fruits got their prevalance from around 15% to 60%+. Especially early on, isolating the genetics you want from a clone might be alot of work, and breeding does seem to bring up the prevalance of the trait quite a bit. From there, start isolating clones or isolating on agar and trying to find what you want to get finish it off. At least, that was my take on it not knowing a great deal about fungal genetics specifically.

That's basically where I'm starting, this culture looked like all the caps were going to be round but once they opened they seemed to have a nipple shape so maybe it's more prevalent than I thought but I figured that would be a good place to start learning. Once I felt I had an isolate with nipple caps and a good producer.
Pretty sure these are in fact AA+
That last picture is my favorite.

 from 2nd gen print
Not exactly what I was looking for from the print that came from the first pic, but close. Time to grow more limited genetic MS and try to find what I want.
Kinda lost my boner for the project when I saw stonesun's Roatan grow http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/15772171#15772171

TOO BAD! This thread is now about YG pins tipping over cakes. That's their signature trait! Due to super strain magic they tip over cakes EVERY TIME.
