What is Syzygy?
"Syzygy was the name of a Spore vendor back in the early days. The person behind this company was apparent Terence Mckenna. A 25year old spore print originating from this company was reincarnated and these spores now circulate under the name “Syzygy”. This strain was first donated to the FSRE by Anand"
So is it a strain or a company name..? Can't find much about it, other then what I quote above.

It's a variety ("strain"), but still regular p. Cubensis.

Yeah "cube is a cube", but almost all strains have some info about them, but this one lack of it and confuses me with the company name thing. And a friend of my clearly stated that "Syzygy" was just the name of the company and not the strain. Not that it matters, but I'm just curious.

It would seem it's the company name, and that they only sold 1 type so it got its name that way. Similar to the PF classic strain, though PF used to sell others at times.

Syzygy is Amazonian in origin. Here’s the original ad that ran in High Times in the 80’s. “HIGHEST QUALITY MUSHROOM SPORES collected from Amazonian strains of STROPHARIA CUBENSIS (also known as Psilocybe Cubensis) are now available from: Syzygy. You will receive several million spores on a glass coverslide sealed in a plastic envelope for just $10.00 per sporeprint, plus $1.00 for shipping per order (Add 4% sales tax in Hawaii.) Offer void where prohibited.”

I'm trying to find APE spores but every vendor I check doesn't have it, and its been that way for some time. I found a non vendor selling APE syringes on this site. Any thoughts? Should I risk it?

eventually a strain can degrade over time. How would one go about giving such a strain a makeover (reintroducing some of the lost... genes) without significantly altering it's original appearence? Does stabilizing a strain have anything to do with this?

Have you checked safeorscam.com?
They're taking orders but not open for business "quite yet"? How would you even know if they have the thing you want?

over the years talking to other people about their personal favourite cubensis is apart from cambos the majority of the time i get 3 names
transkei, tasmanian and PE.
one thing they all have in common is them gnarly stems!
seems fruits with this trait make a big impression.

KSSS, PE6 are my favorite. Then it's a toss up between B+ and PE for my third favorite.

If you have an unlabeled spore syringe, is there any way to reliably determine the variety?

Not really with most classic cubes. If I had a short list of possible candidates than maybe but with varieties like cambo or B+ it would be very hard to tell for sure which was which. If it's something special like PE or AA+ than yes.

Lol you mean without a microscope or growing it out?

EDIT: Actually in this situation you should just grow it out and give it your own name. Green Rabbit Strain.

I'm asking hypothetically, I'd like to make a strain with that name but it would have to be an isolate or a clone close to an isolate.
No I mean after you grow it even. Even with a microscope all cube spores will look the same. You can't identify varieties by the fruit though since they all look the same, and when they look weird it is not consistent. Besides PE...
My point is, if you can't identify varieties either microscopically or macroscopically, then how can you even say the varieties exist, and are any different?
Like, what if there was just one variety, and it was labeled with 10 different names. All these varieties could be the same and yet we draw conclusions about differences between them when there is no way to accurately prove they are even the strain you say they are...
I think the only way to distinguish varieties would be to process the genome and see if, and to what extent there are differences in the genetics.
