How many do you have available to photograph man???? If you find some baby pins - that would be the BEST way to get a glimpse of what it could be - if its just that lone specimen and those two pics - its gunna be impossible to say what it is 100%

the fruit was solitary. One can see some mycelium at the base of the fruit, but other than that it's the only one so far. I put it under some leaf litter and gave it some water.

Yeah; I looked at pictures for all 3 active Gyms that grow in Georgia, and it doesn't look like any of them to me. I'm a noob though.

Could be close to Gymnopilus sapineus.

My thoughts, quite actually ... I'll get better pics in the morning. We can also note the change in the color of the lamellae in that time, too.

It's really hard to get with the lens I have now, but there are fine striated fibrils left on parts of the pileus. Another note is the gills are actually rather brittle.

EDIT: I messed with the color some. It was under exposed

I went out yesterday and looked. I saw no Pans. Either today when I get home from school (where I'm at now) this weekend I'll look again.

I was looking around at informaion on G. sapineus and Roger's mushrooms mentioned some species of Gymnopilus may be "deadly poisonous." Is this because of confusion with Galerina or some other mycotoxin I don't know about?
Quote:
Roger's Mushrooms said: Habitat singly or in small tufts on hardwoods and conifers. Found throughout North America. Season July-October. Not edible, some species of Gymnopilus can be deadly poisonous.
EDIT: I also find it strange that in the wikipedia articule on G. sapineus, the edibility to the right of the article say psychoactive whil the text iself states in the first paragraph specimens do not contain psilocybin. I'm confused ...

There is no firm evidence that any gym species is deadly poisonous.
There has been an early study that found G.sapineus to be active but subsequent studies have failed to confirm this. Part of the problem is that G.sapineus, G.penetrans and G.hybridus have very often been confused with each other. Of sequences lodged genebank shows that there are two markedly different sequences conforming to these species. In Australia there is at least one species of gym macroscopically similar to G.sapineus that is active. The species is generally overlooked because of a number of negative reports and because it fails to show signs of bluing.
