ID Request (NSW, Eastern) gymnopilus?
    #14512670 - 05/25/11 11:06 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Hi, apologies for I am new, and an amateur at usual closeups. I saw these, at a group of eucalyptus trees. One had these spouting from the root base of a eucalyptus below. I'll edit this subsequently for better quality.

Habitat: Growing below at the root. On bark, soil and dirt. Surrounded by the trees, grass plains.

Climate: Autumn. Rain, wind.

Gills: Yellow. Brown-orange when moist (in pics). Wavy, not aligned, some don't attach or trace to cap.

Stem: Coloured light yellow, some with dark purple patches. Feels tough. Curved and thick.

Cap: Yellow-orange. When moist, brown. Scaly. Dark purple around the edges. Biggest one about 5cm width. Convex shape?

Spore print: Currently doing this.

Bruising: Not sure.

Location: Found in Sydney.

Looks like a species of Gyms. Not sure which one it would be based on your location.

--------------------
Having lived through an existence close to nature, one accepts the small and simple things as most important in life. Sun, wind, rain and snow. The sounds birds make, smells of fresh wild flowers. Love of all kinds, from friends and family, thy self and our neighbors. Beautiful sunrises to the darkest clouds dancing above in the sky. To forgive, learn, share and express. This is the only thing a man such as myself can ask for. What comes as the result is nothing short of the core of human existence, to truly live free in body and mind.

Perhaps something close to Gymnopilus purpuratus, I am sure a Gym expert will chime in soon enough.

They are Gymnopilus, try the key in Hesler's monograph.

I always wonder about these, I don't think anyone really knows about the aussi gyms. We have purpuratus and junosis, I think the call for this find should just be junosis?

How many problems are we likely to encounter if we just make a "species cluster"?

Then that is it? Perhaps they are really Gymnopilus junonius?

The colouring suggests that they are something other than junonious

Probably a fair few considering you're talking about combining over 40 species of Gymnopilus.

There is no way in the world that these are G.purpuratus.
The annulus and coming from Australia tells us that Gymnopilus junonius is the most likely identity for this species. The coloring isn't especially remarkable as there is no actual bluing as such.
They are G.junonius pure and simple. Not active.
