that jar of rye was so over-colonized it's not funny & WTF is w/ the foil on the rye lid?
www.mushroomvideos.com
is a way more informative source than that.

NO. A casing layer goes on top, and usually after the substrate is colonized.

I've read several posts where people put a layer on bottom and on top.

LoL, I don't know, I've been gone for awhile. I suppose the procedure
could have changed. But, I use to take my BRF cakes and crumble them
into casings with a small casing layer on the bottom and on top. It was
supposed to help spread out the moisture levels evenly. No body does it
like that anymore?
It's right here. http://www.shroomery.org/50/Casing-101

idk, i think its just as easy to spawn to a bulk substrate as it is a peat/verm combo, and it will contribute to yield significantly

I just assumed he was incorrectly calling his growth substrate a "casing layer."

I agree with you. I was just responding to the post above because I know
that I've done it before, and its not completely out of the normal. But
yes, as easy as it is to spawn, and the rewards, its kindof a no brainer
unless you don't have access to other substrates.

The casing layer is used to create a good environment for pinning, which you don't want on the bottom of a tub.

He called it coco peat and verm, I assumed sure he was going for a casing layer. I've not seen peat used as a substrate successfully before.

Yeah the confusion here is that the dude was calling his bulk substrate his casing layer. 2 different things.

I'm also guessing that his spawn is so clumpy because he is unaware of the invention of the bicycle tire.

Me too.
Then, a few weeks later they post asking why all their fruits formed on the bottom of the substrate instead of the top. The casing layer should go on top if used. However bulk substrates such as manure fruit as well or better uncased. RR
