just like the subject line says. Can I use vermiculite all by itself to case a tray of colonized WBS?

You can, but verm by itself makes a poor casing layer. You'd be better off to use it as a bulk substrate and mix the grains into it well. Be sure to 'frost' a small amount of verm on top to cover all the grains. RR

Yeah, mix the WBS with verm in a 1:1 ratio and let it colonize. This improves yields a lot more than casing grains alone. If you want you can get some free coffee grounds from Starbucks and spawn to that too but its no big deal.
For casing layer use 50/50 verm/peat moss. You can get giant blocks of peat moss for $6 at Lowes which lasts forever.

I case my WBS cakes with straight verm, check the F+ grow in my sig. I havn't tried using the verm as a bulk sub and compared results so I can't say how much more yield you will have.
The answer to your question is "Yes". The second half of the answer to your question is that there are ways to further increase yields if you have the desire to do so. The peat/verm I hear works great for casings. Add a little poo/coir to the wbs then case gives even better results

Indeed. You should check Craigslist for any farms giving out free horse manure in your area, it really is worth it.

I thought that you wanted fresher poop than that. I just got about 1,000 lbs. (1/2 ton) of old poop today for the garden and figured I would go out and collect some nuggets for "hobby work".
If I can just use the old stuff that would save me from crunching nuggets which is a thankless job to say the least.

It's perfect if you're growing white button mushrooms for the grocery store. If you're growing P cubensis, you want manure that's less than a year old, while being fully dried and field aged in the sun. Performance will be much better than 30 year old compost, which is better suited to a garden area for plants. RR
