Wilting Teens After Harvest (pics)
    #14512466 - 05/25/11 10:33 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

2nd time with cakes. This has happened both times with two different strains.

Before picking the larger mushrooms the cake looks like this...

Picked like this...

What's left behind wilt and turns to this within 24hrs.

This includes pins and "teens" that have a few days before they are ready to be harvested.

That is before dunking to rehydrate.

Picked or cut, tried on two different cakes, had the same results.
I don't think they are being picked unusually rough.

I'd like to know how it can be prevented, if at all.
I read in the forums and didn't find what I needed to answer this question.

:whathesaid:

Is it a SGFC exactly to the tek? Seems a bit like lack of humidity + really high temps.

The SGFC to spek, but with ultrasonic coolmist keeping it at a 75f with a RH of 95% all the time. A computer (fan blowing inward) and the coolmist is on a timer  of 30min on 30min off.

Occasionally tiny tiny droplets form on the cakes and a few of the mushrooms.

There are two analog hygrometers double checking the RH. There is a analog thermometer checking the temp. One is on the wall of the SGFC the other is on the peralite.

The setup gets indirect sunlight and there is a daylight lamp near buy that is on for 12 hours a day.

The same thing happened with in a very non-traditional SGFC.

During and After the harvest they are on aluminium lids with puncture holes that are rusting little. There is about a 1/4 inch between the cake and the peralite.

Youncould just be injuring the clusters. It happened with my last ouster block. After I picked some from a cluster the rest would dry/abort. Just pick them all as a cluster, even the little guys, then when all your clusters are picked, dunk for a few hours.

Consider mycelium a highly intelligent communicative network that responds to torture....no matter how gentle you are, removing the mushrooms by pulling them off damages the mycelium, and it responds by terminating growth. This is one of the reasons evenly distributed pinsets and maturation rates are so highly sought.

If you want to pick mature fruits and let the others keep growing, your best bet it to slice/cut the mature fruits just above the base of the stem without disturbing the others around the ones you are removing.

No disrespect to the advice given, but I don't think it is the FC. It is just like a SGFC except with backup systems to ensure RH, Temperature, and air flow.

I understand the narrative of mushrooms be tortured.

Next time full clusters will be picked and pins on the other side of the cake will be observed for reaction.

And then with other cakes, more mature mushrooms will be extra super gently cut. Then surrounding pins will be observed.

AND then, either more photos and questions or I'll post here the positive results of a more gentle touch.

Exactly, I myself can also speak from experience with this. Good luck with your grow :sunny:.

i do.

and the SGFC has all of those things. you just made them all not work though.

read the link labeled PROPER SGFC in my signature,

then you'll see why managing the airflow and temp and junk actually ruins the SGFC

It's pretty much like everyone says. I didn't know Ryath's information but it fits perfectly with my recent experience.

You can't make a SGFC to tek BUT add "....". It's not a SGFC. I tried the cool mists, the fans, the heaters, the incubation, the timed everything and none of it was as effective as just leaving it be the way it is. If you're not going to be attentive then do a monotub or use vermiculite to provide moisture (an added layer of 1-2 inches on top, moisten it once every day) and keep a fan in the same room not pointed anywhere near the FC to circulate air. This should work well for 7-8 hours, afterwards, the humidity starts to drop (IME). More perlite (5 inches or so) is great as well.

I'll set up a second SGFC, to spec with nothing else added, to see what happens.

The area that the current modified SGFC is in gets temps of a some what constant 85-90f; too hot for mushrooms. The coolmist keeps that down to 75f without having to run an air conditioner all day.

Is there another way?

I foresee a martha in my future.

Well that's a good cause to go out of your way and use a cool mist. THE has Ecuadors that have been fruited at 90ish degrees and did great so maybe it'd be ok. What strain are you using?
