Recylced Paper Preparation?
    #14516335 - 05/26/11 04:43 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

What types of recycled paper are suitable to use as oyster substrate?
Are there any teks that outline bulk preparation of recycled paper as a substrate for logs?
Thanks.

EDIT: Found this, but if anyone can point me towards teks using only recycled paper / cardboard I would be much obliged.

That tek looks great.
Have you experimented with cutting the cardboard into smaller pieces at all?
Have you ever attempted this cardboard tek in polytubing or larger blocks?
Thanks, very helpful!

I've had success growing oysters on shredded brown paper grocery bags --- from Whole Foods, so they're guaranteed recycled. I simply shred them using a document shredder (10 paper bags to one large gussetted bag), add 2 tablespoons gypsum for the same quantity, and water to "field capacity." Shredded newspaper also works well, though it has a tendency to wad up tightly. In the future, I think my standard recipe will be to combine the two.

:thanx:

Yes, I have. It was mentioned briefly in the article, and there is a picture at the very bottom of a larger block. I've used grocery bags without a problem. The only time I ever had a contam was when the cardboard was too wet.
