Emergency Hanging Towel Martha Tek
    #14519789 - 05/27/11 08:26 AM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Everything was going great with my martha setup with a coolmist running 30on 30off in bottom and 6 cased grain blocks.  Everything just formed its pinset and ready to go then what ya know my coolmist burns out.  I tried taking apart and replacing with another ac motor but I couldn't find an appropriate fan, etc to salvage one from.  BTW, the Kaz brand coolmist I had was really poorly designed with no protection from rust in the motor (it was very rusty and corroded).  Next time I buy one im going to silicon the hell out of it.

Anyway, to make things work i'm now using soaking wet hand towels on coat hangers hanging in the lower shelf where the coolmist used to be.  Also I have a wet towel on bottom to collect drips and rolled wet hand towels on the 2nd shelf in between the grain blocks.  My martha has several large holes on bottom of bottom shelf for FAE intake and several large holes at top of 2nd shelf for outtake so air will pass through hanging towels like a radiator.  So far RH is holding at 95%.  I plan to rotate with clean towels every few days and keep misting them and interior often to keep humidity high as possible.

So if you have no coolmist this seems to be a viable solution.

Looks like RH still dips down to 90% or lower if I don't mist walls and towels every 3-4 hours, so I still recommend a tight misting schedule with this.  Only mist casings though when necessary.

I would recommend to NOT alter your coolmist & when it burns out, return it to the store & get a fresh new one for free...

or you could invest in some perlite & do it that way. Cloth towels sound bad to put into an FC...seems like mold would love it...

Vicks/Kaz coolmists used to be good, but they shifted production to mexico, chose low-bid suppliers down there, and they suck now.  I've not had one last over two months since then.  I now refuse to buy any humidifier, since none are made in USA any more.  Don't reward the bastards for shipping our jobs out of country, bringing back shit for product, and then raising the price.  Boycott them.

Use the towel, a water hose, or whatever you have, but don't throw away money on imported crap that won't last.

 RR is right Vicks sucks lately. It doesn't even humidify. It's on and has been for some time now, the water is hot but it won't go down a notch. I cleaned it and everything but didn't make a difference.

Towels is a really good idea, it had been used in the old days in desert climates from what I gathered to make homes more humid. Perlite would be good too, you can also mist the inside once or twice a day to help it. Another thing you can do is get a fan going near it and put a big wet towel in front of the fan, soak the towel once a day and it will help bring a lot of humidity into the space (if it is relatively small).

Good luck with your grow.

Speaking of old days in desert climates, I've been reading about how they filled porous ceramic wide-bellied pots with water, evaporation through the pores humidified the house and also cooled the water in the pot. Pretty genius.

Too complicated for humidifying a martha probably, but possibly less prone to mold than a soggy towel? Though I imagine if you wash out the towels instead of letting them sit, mold won't be an issue.

They did do that but that was to raise the micro-climate of their home from say, a 10% humid one to a 30-40% humid one. In the need to raise it to the higher 90s, water in a jug would hardly (if at all) evaporate.

Ebay is where to go. Get the old vicks v400s. Love them suckers.

Wet towel was a good idea in a pinch. Changing it every few days would be fine to keep it mold free, Ive used paper towels in a similar fashion.

So far so good. Everything is pinning well and casing are staying wet enough I only have to rehydrate them once a day.  It takes about 3-4 hours for RH to drop below 90%, and I am letting it drop a little more if pins still look wet, then I mist the second shelf walls and mist the bottom shelf towel area heavily.  The towels will not mold because they are not dripping wet, are laundered, still get FAE, and I will change out every several days with fresh towels.  I have about 8 handtowels hanging in bottom with one large bath towel underneath to soak up drips from plastic and hand towels.

Glad I didn't go to walgreens and buy a new coolmist.  RR is right, the ruling elite has sold out America to Mexico.  I was really liking Donald Trump and his banter on sticking it to China, Mexico, and S. Korea to tax their imports and force American jobs back into the country.  No one else will talk about it :frown:

I would definitely recommend using the syringe method to wet casings around pins without getting pins wet instead of misting with this tek.  Because there is no coolmist on a timer in which RH can be dropped quickly the RH with the towels is very constant and you would pretty much have to take towels out everytime you mist then put back in a half hour later.

On another note, definitely a bad idea to make these cased grain blocks using old grow bag bottoms instead of stiff trays.  Every time I have shifted the blocks around I end up moving the top portion of the bag which mushes in the casing causing a gap between the plastic and block.  I have lost 3 blocks because misting water collected in the gap instead of being taken into the casing and mold sprang up.  This really was just a learning experiment for me and I'm probably going to stick with my bulk straw logs/wheels.  There are just so much easier.
