Cobweb mold is destroying my life
    #14515613 - 05/26/11 02:20 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Ok, I'd really appreciate some advice / moral support because my first manure grow has gone horribly wrong.

I have 2 big invitro bags and a monotub on the go. Everything was going fine until I checked inside them after full colonization and all 3 had a serious infestation of cobweb mold (the bags were worse than the tub but they were all pretty bad).

I figure my "field capacity" manure was too wet. Although the bags had some small open slits in the side, the FAE was probably too low as well (no fannage).

Anyway, as they were all contaminated I decided to spray the feck out of the bastard mold with 3% H202 and then cut some bigger slits in the bags and point a fan at them to increase airflow (as per some advice I've seen on here).

I'm also regularly opening all of them up and fanning directly to try and reduce the humidity and beat this mold.

The H202 has caused the cobweb to melt all over most of the top layer of mycelium and there seems to be not much going on now (I sprayed them 2 days ago).

So basically I'd like to know if the situation is retrievable. Has anyone had any success stories with a bad cobweb infestation?

Am I doing the right thing opening everything up like this to increase airflow and will they ever pin after being battered by the cobweb?

Thanks guys.

FAE was definitely your problem.  It's very hard to get cobweb on a fully colonized substrate that has adequate FAE.

You don't really need or want to reduce humidity.  Exchanging stagnant air is the key.

If there is some way you can cut the invitro bags and fruit them in a shotgun-type fruiting chamber outdoors, natural wind/air movement will help fight off the infection.  Otherwise, you could possibly use a fan (low setting) near the bags indoors.  You'll have to play with the setup to ensure you don't dry them out.

I suppose I could get myself another couple of tubs and whack them in there. I have a small fan on them on a timer; 15 mins on, 15 mins off during the day.

I'm struggling with the colonization phase for the bulk substrate. I understand that's when there should be no FAE but that's how my cobweb problem started. I'm thinking of fanning day 2 after spawning the bulk on my next grow and see how that works....

If I don't, I fear I'll have the same contamination next time round...

They're just large bags that i put the bulk sub in. Is that not invitro? Not sure. I guess it's really not invitro anyway as I had the open slits in the side....

haha! Embarrasing!

How about putting them in a tub and casing them to see what happens?

Torch and h202 mist them definitely, and if you do birth them keep them under a different roof than your usual stuff. If the spores get out( which they may have already) it can be a helluva problem

By adjusting to proper field capacity on future projects, this issue should go away.  If it does not, you should try adjusting your gas exchange (poke more holes in the container's cover) and/or make sure you are properly pasteurizing (not sterilizing!) your bulk substrate.

Also- make 100% sure you have a clean culture. Using dirty LC to start the grains will lead to contams no matter what is in the bags.

My grains were definitely clean. I think the moisture content was really the issue. I've looked at other bag teks and the manure looks much dryer than I had it. I think I'll add verm next time and go a bit easier with the moisture.

Anyway with the big slits I've now cut in the side of the bags for massively increased FAE, the mycelium has pretty much recovered and I've got some serious pinnage so the treatment might have been a success! I read in one of Roger's posts that cobweb can't deal with big FAE and that seems to be working. I've definitely compromised on humidity though to deal with the problem.

Fingers crossed the cobweb doesn't return to kill the babies!!

Thanks guys!

Quick update (apologies no pics) both bags are now growing shrooms but the pinset is ridiculously uneven. In fact there are only patches of pins growing in a few places. I reckon only about 130 pins in each bag (they're big bags).

Probably due to a few things:
1. Quite heavy cobweb contamination
2. H202 treatment to beat the cobweb
3. Introducing FAE before fully colonized
4. Humidity too low for good fruiting due to extra FAE needed to combat the cobweb.
5. Moisture content of bulk too high initially.

Still it'll definitely throw out a good few fruits. But it's looking like a v poor harvest for H poo!

I also thought of something else; the spawn to bulk ration was low, like 1:6 I reckon. That probably led to a slower colonization rate and gave the cobweb more of a chance.

Massive learning curve. Thanks guys!

Well the cobweb never came back and I got just under 600g (wet) in total from the 2 bags. Not bad.

I don't think I'll grow in bags again though. The mini mono tub I have going is looking much better and is easier to work with than bags. I think humidity is too difficult to control in a plastic bag.
