I got good news and bad news... [Re: Panama]

First the good news...
So, today after working 12 hours on a house I'm renovating/remodeling, I come home to - PINS!!!!! Wooo Hoo!

But now the bad -
Green contamination has reared it's ugly head at the spot that was predicted by Todlow...where the metabolites had appeared on one of the micro tubs. Problem is, that cake is now pinning too, though not as many as the uncontaminated one...

So, what should I do with the contaminated cake? Take it out and burn it? Leave it alone and let it fruit? Put it in the compost pile by the garden?

Put it outside. Don't risk it. & before you do, make a salt+water paste to cover the spot. then move it outside ASAP! As soon as that shit turn green, it's sporing...not good.

It's gone from the SGFC and now outside...thanks again. Tomorrow I'll move it to the woods by the chicken manure and straw compost pile. If it fruits, can I harvest?

Will do.
I have some new projects in the incubator including growing out Shiitake dowels to millet, rye and wheat berries, which seems to be progressing well. Also am growing out some transferred shiitake mycelium from said dowel plugs to LME that is also showing growth. Fun stuff.
This thread has been a tremendous help to me to get started, and after the mini mono runs it's course, I'm going to stop posting, and go back to just reading up here. This is a good community, and I enjoy perusing the wide range of topics discussed by it's members.

Well, I lost my internet service almost a week ago due to a bad modem, and just got up online again today, so here's the wrap up on my first grow - one cake was thrown out to the compost pile as it was contaminated and growing green. The second cake pinned and ended up looking like this -

After harvest and drying, I ended up with 15 grams finished from the first flush. I soaked the cake overnight and back into the fruiting chamber it went.
Many thanks to all who contributed advice and encouragement to my first grow, especially Todlow, who has been keenly instrumental to this success. I am more than satisfied, as I met my goal for this initial grow, and learned a tremendous amount by forging ahead and doing it. I am looking forward to continually gaining insight into my new field of endeavor by reading the massive wealth of wisdom deposited in this site.

Thanks Todlow. Funny you should mention the perlite - I picked up two huge bags of the white stuff today at a local grow center...tomorrow the SGFC gets a much needed upgrade.

what grade perlite? is it larger or smaller?
It's probably graded by numbers.

It's the Miracle Grow brand. The bag was sealed and I couldn't view the size until I got it home and opened it...It's not real big particles, pretty average actually... It was only 3 bucks a 2 cf bag, I thought I'd give it a try. I looked for the large flake like you described, but turned up nada around here. The only hydro store I found somewhat close to me (an hour drive away) turned out to be closed for business when I visited the burg it was listed in...no wonder they never answered their phone when I tried calling...
I'd order some online, but the shipping for that stuff is ridiculous... so I'm keeping my eyes open for a supply of the bigger sized flake.

You'll be better off w/ larger perlite, because it will allow for more air to pass through the holes.
that smaller perlite can clog the holes restricting FAE, which, in turn, will mess with your RH

Shopped on egag a while ago...just can't see spending sixty bucks for enough perlite to do a proper SGFC...found another hydro store about an hour and a half away...gonna have to wait until I have multiple reasons to head that direction to get it there... I won't use the small perlite now, will re-sterilize the expanded clay, and re-engineer the ultrasonic vaporizer to do a proper job. I did buy five more of the clear tubs to make some more units with, so in time I'll have it done right. I'm going to visit my local nursery - I know the owner and although he doesn't carry the large perlite, he may be willing to order me some in from his supplier. It's worth a shot.
Markinnewparis - thanks a bunch and best of luck to you on your first grow! There are good people up here to give you a hand getting it right, so if you run into a snag, or are unsure of the next step, they can help you out. I would not have had the success on this grow without the guidance of Todlow and others. Just forge ahead and speak up when you need help - you're sure to get it up here on Shroomery.

dude, just got to him & have him order the largest bag of it. You'll probably have to pay up front, but screw it. That's how I get a large amount of coir under $2 USD per brick...It's hard to find the perfect fit for everything in your area. I'm currently working on course verm. Shit's hard tin find.

It took me awhile to find verm. I finally found some, I think it was at Lowes. Not very coarse, but it was better than none. I litterally checked every store in my area and most of them didn't even know what the stuff was.
I'm gonna go check on my poor-mans right now, wish me luck.
