How are my 7 month old trichocereus bridgesii doing?
    #14517752 - 05/26/11 09:10 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Note:  For ornamental reasons only.  I am not growing this for any chemicals it may or may not possess.  I like the look of this cactus.

Please give me some input?  I just transplanted an extremely overcrowded tray(probably 80+ seedlings) into some seperate pots.  I've got rid of most of my seedlings and now I"m down to a few pots with a couple cacti in them each.  This is a picture of one particular pot, freshly transplanted.

What do you all think?  Are these normal 7 month old cacti?  Any input?

Thanks again cacti lovers!

They do not look much taller than my two month old bridgesii seedlings. How tall are they?

1 1/4 inch doesn't seem that bad for 7 months.

What kind of lighting?

They look better than my 5 month olds. My 2 are kinda light colored and one keeps getting sun burn so I've moved them yet again.

What's your soil mix and lighting?

Mine are around 3 months now and about half that size, however mine have a red tint to them, does that mean they are getting to much sun?

I was lazy and just bought a cacti ready to go soil.  As for the lighting, I used one I already had kicking around in the basement which was originally for an aquarium.

It's a Sun-Glo 24" 20 watt.  A brief description from one page

"The full 4200 degree K full spectrum bulb, simulates clear daylight"

I believe so. One of mine is pinkish red and the other two in it's dish are pale. I believe I increased the light too quick on them.

I've got the other 11 (ones a brig, the others a peruvian) 5 or 6" below a plant light (6500k I believe), and they're doing great!

Those are some neat little buggers though. I count how many areoles there are about once a month to get an idea of how quick they grow and what light/temp combo makes them happiest.

Zoo! Thought we lost ya. They look fine man, don't worry how "good" they're looking as long as they're growing up they'll get by fine.

The first two years are the slowest for baby cacti and it takes a while but once you get there they will take off.

e: Are you feeding them with any kind of fertilizer or just straight H2O?

Thanks man.  No, no fertilizer.  I'm thinking I should look around next weekend for one though hey?  Wouldn't hurt them now hey?

They've only been getting water.  I have been misting them almost every other day, the soil is extremely dry everytime I mist.  It's very dry here.

They look healthy enough (nice and green) dope edit pothead misread
These are T. Peruvianus just under 4 months old

I have been giving them a 10% strength liquid fertiliser since they were 3 weeks after germination

What's the temperature like in their environment?
Also how close are your lights? They look to be stretching a bit instead of growing fatter.
I use a liquid fert that's 1-7-6 (they like low nitrogren), picked it up at the garden store shouldn't be hard to find something.

I live in a pretty cold climate and started them at the beginning of winter.

Unfortunetely, I'm living in a place where the furnace isn't very reliable and there were MANY nights throughout the winter where I woke up in the morning and it felt fudging cold.  I'd touch the glass on my terrarium style container, when going to turn the light on for the day, and it would be dead cold.

The light puts off some heat though and during the day it feels warm and you can see the moisture building up underneath the plastic, so I was hoping that the night time conditions wouldn't effect them much, but apparantely, and now understandably, it has caused slow growth.

After doing some reading last night, I now have my little seedlings roughly 5 to 6 inches away from the lights.

But from the beginning of germination and for the last 6 months, they were roughly 12" away from my light.

I originally tried to germinate 50 perviuanus(tarma) and 50 pachanoi.  I did not have good results.  No previaunus germinated whatsoever and only 10 or so pachanoi germinated.  But over the course of 4 months all my pachanoi started turning almost a yellow colour.  I only have one left that's healthy and looks like the ones in the pictures.  I didn't have the propery humid environment though.  So I fixed that and when I sowed 100 bridgesii seeds, essentially all of them germinated properly.  The tray got extremely overcrowded.  And I figured my lights may even be to close because I was getting burnt tops.

And I just realized that my math is wrong, the pictures in the original post are 6 months old.  But still, I did some googling last night of 6 month old seedlings and man...I suck. lol.

I'm really enjoying this hobby though.  It's satisfying.

that middle one is a "big booty ho!!!"

Were those tips cut for grafts or to induce branching?
