if you could, would you open a franchise? I feel that it is a fairly safe investment
I currently work in an office job making nice money, but I would really like to work for myself one of these days. Mainly so I can go back to smoking without worry of a random drug test....
I've also thought about learning a trade like air-condition repair or really anything like that and opening my own one of those businesses.
Or fuck it and keep the office job?
Ideas and comments?

i would kill to own my own francise if i could run it totally how i thought it should be run. pay the employees a bit better, even offer them a percentage of the stores profits ex: 25 to 50% of the profit is split amonst the employees. so employees have a real sense of ownership, and pride in the store. if they up sell a customer a higher profit item, or make sure everything is spotless it is to their advantage as well as mine.

you'd spend a lot of time there making sure shit was being done right. you can make moeny but you gotta have employees that do work.
i worked at one for years, scammed the fuck out of it because the manager wasn't on point.

YES. I've worked fast food restaurants and I always felt like if me doing a better job means more money in my pocket I'd work harder to please.
But they pay you a set amount no matter how bad or good you do. If you do bad, your fired, if you do good, you can keep your job. Thats not very motivating when you only make minimum wage.

opening a franchise is hard
you kind of have to be in the know and i think have at least 250,000 in the bank or in assets

It probably will not be COMPLETELY owned by you, meaning you wouldn't be able to call the shots. Some things you could do your own way, but most things you have to follow the rules.
And your employees WILL take advantage of you and the business if you're not up to par on your shit. And you better pay them well also. When I worked at 7-11 I used to steal shit all the time. Now that I'm working at papa john's, me and a lot of other employees "steal" free pizzas for ourselves. All the assistant managers let me make myself a free pizza. If the boss knew, he'd have us all booted.
I hate being harsh, but why don't you just go to college and get a real job?
One last thing: customers are fucking stupid.

I did go to college. Have a general business degree with minors in psychology and criminal justice.
I currently work for a pipeline engineering company making good money. It's just that I'm not sure how long I want to stick with the office job and fear of random drug tests
From the people I've spoken to, owning one subway is essentially buying yourself a full time job.
I like the idea of doing a job out of my garage or an extra room in my house. I've thought about going and getting a certification in some trade like air-conditioning repair and just starting my own business like that.....
I just would like to pay off a house and then start up my own business so I can start growing my own greenery
Thanks for all the responses, I appreciate everyone's input

Subway is one of the worst franchises to own.
It costs about $100,000 to open a Subway restaurant, the lowest investment required by any of the major fast food chains. The annual royalty Subway takes from its franchisees- 8 percent of total revenues - is among the highest. A top Subway executive has acknowledged that perhaps 90 percent of the chain's new franchisees sign their contracts without reading them and without looking at the FTC filings. Roughly 30 to percent of Subway's new franchisees are immigrants, many of whom are not fluent in English. In order to earn a decent living, they must often work sixty to seventy hours a week and buy more than one Subway.

Yeah, as long as your area has the necessary amount of your demographic to sustain a satisfying profit.
Me and a few friends are debating on opening a convenience store in town.

I would if I had the money to get into the game. It costs so much. I would actually go for a franchise called Cell Phone Repair. Had a great experience with them and found the demographic area could use more then 1 for all of the Metro PDX area.
