I probably won't know what it is but I'm sure a TI will pop up sooner or later. Would love to see that photograph, though.

The ones you have in that photo are True Morels. The color balance is a bit off so we probably can't see the colors correctly. In any event, you have the ones that are OK for eating.
Happy mushrooming!

He knows they are true morels. He was wondering what the species was.

Where are you? I'm guessing close to west coast?
I'm assuming that you know that what you have are edible, and are just curious about the species.
But in case you don't...don't eat them! Send them to me for further study. I promise to tell you how I cooked them.

Yeah, saw that. When I was writing my smartass post, yours stating possibly M. elata was the last.
I saw a chance to be a wiseass, and by the time I posted you and Toxicman had each logged another post. Kinda took the air out of my tires. Sorry for any offense.

you probably know this if you pick morels but they often develop reddish bruising as they get older or are damaged. chances are the more red on them the further past their prime they are

youre right. they are Morchella elata or something related. there are lots of black morels that look pretty much identical and its not really worth figuring it out because theyre all edible. MUNCH MUCNCH MUNCH!

They're still working out the DNA stuff with the morels. At NAMA last year I heard that it looks like there will be several species when they're done. Hopefully they'll be publishing soon so we can start to try and figure out what we should be looking for to distinguish the species.
Happy mushrooming!
