Does the "Close Door" button in an elevator actually do anything?

Or is it there merely to provide the illusion of control?

i heard that if you hold it and the floor you want down until the doors close, you'll go straight to your floor without stopping.
apparently it's for cops and firefighters
...or something like that
never tried it
edit-but no, it doesn't close the door

It all depends, there are different settings. Some of them are set to not close until you press the button. Certain elevators you can hold down the door close button until you get to the floor you need to skip the others. I used to do it all the time working construction in hotels, would piss those maids right off.

It appears from varies sources that no, they do not do anything..
http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/595/do-close-door-buttons-on-elevators-ever-actually-work
However, NOVA suggests that so do, some dont.

The press and hold door close button and floor number does in fact work...

In most elevators installed since the early 1990s, the "close door" button has no effect. Otis Elevator engineers confirmed the fact to the Wall Street Journal in 2003.
In 2004 the New York Times reported that more than 2,500 of the 3,250 "walk" buttons in New York intersections do nothing. "The city deactivated most of the pedestrian buttons long ago with the emergence of computer-controlled traffic signals, even as an unwitting public continued to push on."

Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. I used to work near an elevator that would close the doors if you tapped the floor button twice. I still tap floor buttons twice on occasion...

I was told that the only time the 'close door' button works is when the elevator maintenance key is in! The ONLY place I have ever seen where the close door button actually works is at the hospital I am now training at.

There have been situations where I pound on the button because someone I hate is running towards the door.
Fuck close door buttons.

It depends on the brand of elevator. Otis has the safety feature where if you press and hold the close and the number it goes to that floor without stopping. Many other brands dont do that and dont even close.
