is putting tin foil underneath the cakes necessary? if so what does it actually do? I've done it anyway but i'm just curious why you actually have to do it

this is my second time birthing cakes, my first attempt at it didn't go too well, managed to get a few decent mushrooms though.
I didn't use foil then but i didnt do a lot of things i was supposed to do. is it bad for the cakes not to have foil underneath them? or do they still grow in the same way?

You want some sort of barrier between the cakes and the perlite. Foil is not usually recommended, because the enzymes that the mycelium secretes will eat holes straight through the foil.
Most people simply place the cakes on top of jar lids.

If you don't put up a barrier between the cake and perilite the cake will begin to grow into the ground. It looks really cool but the new mycelium is really prone to contams

yeah jar lids, or foil both work fine
i dont know that cakes would eat foil...maybe zey do
but without that barrier, youll get mycelium searching all thru your perlite, and maybe even some fruits in the perlite

foil would be fine considering the cakes are only sitting on the pice for about 13 days. now the aluminum baking pans with poo and such sitting for over a month then the mycelium will sometimes eat through. i forget the post but the guy showed the aluminum tray after he was done, huge chunk ate out of it.
