Fire Thread

So here's a quick little story. Last summer a good friend and I decided to take a little camping trip in the mountains near my house. We took along a couple of chocolates, drove way out into the woods and set up camp near a river.
Ate the chocolates and took a little hike in the woods waiting for the contents to kick in. A little while later we are coming back from the hike, feeling good and discussing all of the beautiful things one might discuss while in the woods trippin' on some mushies.
We proceed to begin making a small campfire. I gather some kindling and he gets the newspaper. We are both working on breaking up sticks and figuring out how we want to build it. I was in the scouts for years and did my fair share of campfire building. My friend is kind of a newb when it comes to fire makin' skills.
So i start making a little "teepee" style base on top of the newspaper and light it up. He starts throwing all sorts of random twigs all over the base and in effect begins to smother the little flames air supply.
I try to explain to him that it has to have air to really get going and he gets a little weird with me (like defensive). So i sit back and let him take over the fire. For a good ten minutes i chill and watch him attempt to make a fire by just randomly placing sticks everywhere. This ends with no fire and a frustrated friend.
I then have this talk with him about how generally it's a good idea to assign a point person at the early stages of the fire making process since everyone has their own way of doing it.
So he sits back and i build us a nice little fire. The rest of the night was great.
Here's where i want to hear how y'all approach fire duties. Do you assign one person to get the initial flame going? Have you ever had someones ego hurt because they sucked at making a fire and you had to take over for them?

I build the fire. Mrs Rabbit gets to help by gathering all the wood. RR

I dunno, it just comes naturally I guess Either I get appointed by whoever I'm with (that tends to happen frequently; one of my friends consistently calls me a pyromaniac, although that's only partly true ), or whoever starts laying stuff out builds the fire until it's either successful, or until (s)he fucks it up and enlists help from someone else.

I'm usually the fire builder when we go camping as well, I've always just had a natural affinity for building/keeping a good burning fire going.

good to know i'm not the only one who likes to "assign" a fire starter. that fire building competition sounds epic.

I don't approach it in any real fashion but I am going camping this weekend and this sounds like a good idea.
Usually it's a bunch of people kind of in each others way doing crap here and there,a couple who know, a few more who have no idea all stumbling over each other. This weekend I'll make sure to assign duties

Haha, I've been in that sort of situation you described many times....Really, I like to elect my self as the "fire starter". If someone else speaks up and would rather do it I let them have at it, if what they do works then if not then I come in a resuscitate the mess (usually the case).
I'm amazed at how many people don't know WTF they're doing when it comes to basic things like a camp fire. Sure a lot of people might be able to get a fire going with a shitload of dried grass and by randomly throwing wood on it. But I'm all about an efficient, well breathing fire that puts out heat.
I have seen some very sad and pathetic approaches to starting fires

What most people don't realize is that once the fire is started, it doesn't matter what you trow on it is gonna burn, and be bright, more lectric than moonlight and hot, so hot it alchemates the energy in the area, giving power to true evolution...

Huh?
I usually let my wife start the fire. She has a big firebug streak in her so it pleases her. Usually after one of us says it's time for a fire she just attacks it. Actually the more I think about it the more I realize I have no choice in the matter unless I sneak up to the pit
Wood gathering, that's both our jobs. Wood breaking, cutting, that tends to be me, especially the breaking part of it.
