Are these yummy?
    #14511411 - 05/25/11 06:59 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Found these growing in a barn in some 30 year old horse poop. there is rotted wood underneath also, so they could be growing from the rotten wood with the poop as casing.

Ideas? I printed that cap and got a huge ass print off it! dont remember the color, it's at home while i'm at work

Looking a bit like an Agaricus, but I'll be darned if I know which one.

Did it stain yellow, red or not at all?
Did it smell good (mushroomy, almondy) or bad ( like ink)?

Certainly not very yummy with all that dirt on them.

I dont believe there was staining, and it did smell good if I remember right (I have a horrible sniffer, normally have to ask others to smell for me)

They're relatives of the ones you get at the store. The edible species are generally pretty good. Odor is the easiest way to tell the edible and toxic ones apart. If it smells good, you're OK. If it smells metallic, like library paste, phenol, or some other chemical smell, don't eat them. While they cook, pay attention to the smell then, too. The bad ones apparently smell then, too.

Happy mushrooming!

thanks for that added info! I'm 99% sure it smelt good, but like I said, can't remember and can't smell well. I'll be attempting to put spores to agar, then to WBS spawn to both straight poo, straight wood, wood/poo mix cased with jiffy. I'll be doing 3 monos as a test to see exactly what this type of mushroom prefers most. If I have issues with pinning on the first two straight sub tubs, I'll make sure to do a late casing

What about these?

I found these near by where my cousin found glow in the dark jack-o-lanturns growing last year. They were found in large piles of 30+ year old poop.

The stems look almost translucent, but they don't glow in the dark (after being picked and sitting in my bag for 5+ hours, didn't glow after I introduced to day light bulbs for 5 mins either)

Checked pics and I'm 99% sure your right on that one, but google doesn't give any info on whether or not they are edible, actives or poisonous

Why take a risk eating a dirty mushroom that's maybe as good as a portabello? It was a big fat chant, morel, king, or something like that, then sure.

Toss 'em. Bolete season is right around the corner, and you'll soon find some beauties.

oh I tossed it, I kept the spore print though. I'm starting an edible farm and Plan to start with 2 or 3 types and expand to 20+ types offered. This is just something to play with :-)
