Here's the SGFC I made - nothin' special, but it's mine.

The hose going into the side is an automatic mister system using a $5 Thrift Store ultrasonic humidifier with a 25 cent TS hose attached to the output leading into the side of the FC. I'll dig out a timer later and set it up for an hour or so a day...

Mini Tubbin'... [Re: Panama]
    #14469604 - 05/17/11 07:34 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

It's been six and a half days, and I had to do another check on the tubs...wow! The 1/2 pt cakeds colonized the coir/verm quickly in the little containers, and I think they are done...sooooo, in the SGFC they go...

Looking closely at one of them, I think I detect what may be a little bit of contamination...slightly off white in the middle and to the side, about the size of a half dollar...

The other looked fine...

Time will tell I guess... anyone want to help me out let me know what they think?

A 100% properly SGFC needs no help other than a bit of misting + fanning.

As you're using hydroton, I can see the necessity of the coolmist. However, the coolmist should be located towards the bottom of the FC, because hot+humid air will rise. Just fill that top hole w/ polly & put the new inport hole for the coomist just above your hydroton by about 1".

Good find though.

The tubs don't look 100% IMO. They're about 90%. See the large spots of substrate. I only put my tubs into fruiting conditions when I see the first pins (about 2-4). That way I know she's ready to pop. It's a pinning strategy to allow the substrate to colonize in a high CO2 environment. It'll use up more of the nutrients & water in your substrate when you put into Fruiting Conditions, but you'll have a stronger first flush.

The only "off color" I see in the second pic (first pic of the tub by itself) is metabolites. You probably do have a contam in the tub due to it not being 100% & already producing metabolites, but it's not necessarily a bad thing.

The mushrooms will recognize the barrier of contams & immediately fruit as the organism recognizes the inability to reproduce.

Also, if you look closely @ that picture, the metabolites have formed a barrier around that uncolonized portion of the tub. Definitely a contam there. but no worries, as it has yet to show itself. Just keep an eye on it.

Okay, thanks you guys...dang, rushed it a bit I see... I'll move the hose to the bottom tomorrow and stuff the top hole - thanks again.

Also, will keep an eye on that tub for contams...I'll toss it if need be.

Looks good, but where's your light @? Or do you just rely on the ambient light from the window?

Also, if you notice your RH gets low due to that huge hole now @ the top, you can stuff it tighter w/ poly or just tape over it & cut a few 1/4" holes in it...

Was planning on just using the ambient light from the window right next to it, but if it needs more, I guess I could rig up some cfl's by it. The top of the SGFC is solid though, not clear...could I hang some cfl lights around the sides so the lumens would penetrate?

I've got  a digital RH/temp meter with a remote probe I can use to monitor humidity levels...

yea you could rig them around the top sides to get some more light in there if you're not noticing as strong of growth as you'd expect.

I recommend analog hygrometers to everyone. $5 & they're calibratable..

http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-Analog-Hygrometer/dp/B0007VWEQA/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1305752372&sr=8-4

I have 2 of those. I didn't get them off amazon. I found them somewhere else for $5. But they're worth $10 for sure.

Coolness.  Thanks for the link.  Did a search and just bought one offa ebay for 7.99 free ship.

I have a light bar that holds 4 bulbs in a row...used to be an old movie camera light bar for photofloods...I put CFL floods in it now and it kicks out some serious directional light - about 400w worth loaded up and uses only about 50w/h power , plus low heat. Think I'll rig it up.

GLC today... [Re: Panama]
    #14485910 - 05/20/11 06:47 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

I did Agar's GLC tek today using one of the 1/2pt jars of rye I colonized from the LME LC test up above.  Since the jar was so small, and I was planning to store 1 pint of the GLC, I only used two 60ml syringes of sterile water to soak the grain and re-aspirate. It made the pint jar of sterile water nice and cloudy.  The other cake I'm soaking overnight, and then gonna treat it like BRF cake and birth it to my SGFC... I know, I know, I'm not supposed to do that with grain, but really, I didn't want to do another micro tub until I get done with the ones I'm cookin' now, so what the hey...

My mini mono tub is still under wraps... so far I've resisted the urge to peek in on it, but I have been untying the bag and getting some fresh air in there every day. Six more days and I'll take a look...

Thanks mabachko, I hope so... it's been five days and no action yet on the micro tubs in the SGFC - they still look pretty much the same as when I put them in there, maybe a bit more colonized, but no pinning yet...this waiting is killing me ...  :waits:

And it's been six full days for the mini mono tub in the black bag.  I peeked at it while airing it out today...the four inches of CCVG is nice and white and colonization is proceeding well...the plan is to wait another four days, remove it from the black bag, and introduce it to fruiting phase...

Last night I thought the mini tubs were looking a little dry, so I turned on the ultra sonic mister to it's lowest setting - almost no vapor coming out...planned on  leaving it on for an hour or so, as it blows in fresh air w/moisture...well, then a huge storm blew into my area, tornado touched down in the next town over, but we got massive hail and sideways rain...and I forgot about the mister... this morning I got up and discovered it still on... :uhoh:  so I shut it off and fanned the FC... some of the moisture has evaporated now, but there is some fine beading on the surface of the tubs...I've got it by an open window now, hoping the fresh air and a little sunshine will dry it out some...

It's safe to say I've made some bogus mistakes on these mini tubs, and now I'm thinking I'll be lucky to get anything from them ...  I'm planning on leaving it by the open window tonight...it will get pretty cool, but the air movement may help it  a bit. We'll see...

Is my mini-mono ready for fruiting stage? [Re: Panama]
    #14508692 - 05/25/11 07:29 AM (12 years, 9 months ago)

It's been just about ten days under wraps for the 'Doc_T' mini-mono tub I started, and I've looked in on it the last couple of days, and have seen no further development of colonization of the mycellium on the CCVG substrate.  So I opened it up for some pics to share, and am looking for some advice as to whether or not this is ready for the fruiting stage...

This is the tub coming out of the black bag...plenty of moisture, for sure...

And here's a shot of the surface of the substrate -

Thank you Todlow...I don't want to screw this one up by being premature on introducing it to fruiting conditions...The little guys have dried out a bit too, only a couple of drops visible on them now.

you may need to plug a few of those SG holes w/ tape or something, as I can see them allowing too much FAE & drying out your substrate quickly.

OR

You could mist a little more.

Are you referring to my mini mono, or my SGFC?  The mini mono holes are exactly 2" apart, as I took my time measuring them for the second tub, but the SGFC holes are approximate, but mostly 2"... There are all made with a 1/4" bit.

The deed is done, and the mini-mono has been opened up and placed next to a window to start fruiting.
