False Morel Poisonings

There have been some recent threads asking about the safety of eating False Morels. I try to comment in such threads whenever I can, but there are so many threads that it's easy to miss some.
So far this year there have been 10 poisonings by False Morels reported to the Grand Traverse County Health Department. That's not a big area being covered by these people, and it only covers reported cases. You can bet that there are more cases that aren't reported.
I will certainly agree that it is possible to make them safer to eat. But I discourage their consumption for a reason - people mess it up. When they do, they get poisoned.
http://www.detnews.com/article/20110525/METRO/105250421/1361/Grand-Traverse-County-health-officials-report-mushroom-hunters-poisoned
tl;dr - Don't eat False Morels, you'll get poisoned.
Happy mushrooming!

good idea posting this here. i read about this in the news section of the shroomery. perhaps this should be a sticky thread in MH&I for a little bit, seeing as most of the posts regarding this are here, and its good information for people to have.
thanks ToxicMan

Not trying to argue, but what are you considering 'false morel'? i.e., The Verpas and gyromitrin sp.? (and Helvalla)
I can see some of the gyromitrin being avoided.... But, if I am not wrong, not preparing any wild mushroom, even morels could lead to 'gastric distress' at least...
Not trying to encourage it... Just making sure I understand the warning! Thanks!!

False Morels include Gyromitra, Helvella, and Verpa, and several other genera. In general, any of the morel-like mushrooms that aren't in the genus Morchella.
Undercooked morels can certainly produce gastric upset. But I'm not aware of any deaths from that, and I am aware of deaths from eating false morels. Fortunately, deaths from false morels are rare.
Happy mushrooming!

Thanks... I can understand that... Gyromitra is what think of as false morel...and think that deaths ( not in the USA) are attributed to Gyromitra esculenta and ifula ....
People eat verpas and Gyromitra gigas... Doubt any one eats Helvalla though... Only found two of them ever... But... I totally agree about the warning... Good point

Is Helvella lacunosa not a sought after mushroom? I've found loads of em, but I've never consumed any...

Yeah there is some debate that it may contain gryromitrin. Otherwise from the people who have eaten they say its nothing exciting. I personally avoid it. And yeah it's damn abundant.

Certainly I've heard less bad things about Verpas than the other genera, but there have been some reports of poisonings by them in the past (nothing as serious as gyromitrin poisonings). There appears to be a strong possibility that the relatively non-toxic false morels may be carcinogenic. I don't have a good sense of how reliable that fear is, but true morels are typically out at about the same time, so I never bother with false morels. Keep in mind also that much of the warning is for people who wouldn't have the slightest idea about how to tell a Verpa from a Gyromitra from a Helvella.
