Vista wont load I see my mouse and a black screen
    #14507128 - 05/24/11 10:00 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Currently on my little built in OS, feels like Im lost in the wood on windows 95! on a 56k

Ok so basically I start having those random crashes a few day ago. I got a couple of errors, like bad_header_page or SYSTEM32 crash, then it said page manager. I started getting them ore frequently, once my second hard drive that is a little old started bugging my music froze up. Sometimes it wouldnt reboot, I cleaned my computer of dust, first the processor fan, second the RAM fan, both seemed to help (VERY dusty, bad habbit I know, spank me!). Once my computer crashed and it automatically ran a scandisk, repaired some error. Tried scanning my main HD for error a bit later, nothing. Eventually it crashed again and said my SYSTEM32 header wasnt matching the calculated one. When I rebooted after this it automatically crashed in normal n safe n command mode. Then I ran repair for startup repair, but now it boot to the point where I see my mouse and nothing happen but my computer keeps loading(I waited about 20minutes nothing happened...). Ran a scandisk /r throught windows CD, didnt find any error and its still not working.

HELLLLLLLLLLPPPPP!!!!!

Funny how shroomerie run so smoothly on my little 100mg OS. Love that place!

Just a little something to add, sometimes when I rebooted the whole thing I had visual glitch as in misplaced shit, sometime it said my built in OS wasnt completly installed. Also those error I got before said it crashed because of hardware, preventing damage. My friend who had a similar HD and a similar card (HD broke but was on warranty, card started crashing...). I dont seem to have any visual glitch ATM.

Stuck the whole night without anything... dont think I lost my shit but ive got a pretty big DB in there.

what brand is your hard drive?  go to their website and they should have some software to check to see if the hard drive is still good.

after that i would run a linux live disc, if that boots ok and runs fine then its most likely your OS is screwed up, which could be from viruses, to a failing cpu/ram/ect

if you get linux to run, backup everything important, reformat, reinstall your OS.  Once you have everything you like installed run an image program like acronis which will let u fix problems like this really quickly.  Then get you a external hard drive and get in the habit of using that for anything "extra" that isn't on your image backup

Its weird because I was checking on a site they were saying to check like the remote call procedure reg keys to see if it was changed from a virus it wasnt. Short story is it allowed to me load the hive (no idea wtf but anyway) I could see every single files on my HD and scandisk found 0 error.

By the way as of right now I have no access to another computer. Cant really burn anything :frown: Later ill probably get to tho.

Just wish there was a way to check if my hardware was working. Also my OS is actually installed on this computer and fully working.

Too hot and dusty can kill the RAM or the CPU cache.
Clean it out, fdisk and reformat, see what's going on.
But how old is this machine?

not very old, about 2 years old. I used a tool on windows cd memory check, found no error with the memory.

I cleaned everything pretty good and didnt really seem to help.

I put my money on a dying hard drive. Or just a fucked up Windows install, but I certainly wouldn't exclude the hdd option. Note that hdd's are much more prone to overheating than CPUs or RAM. In my years of working with computer hardware, I have encountered maybe 2 or 3 dead CPUs as a result of overheating, and no dead RAM due to overheating (note that RAM doesn't generate much heat in the first place!). RAM usually dies because of ESD, if it dies at all. So handle it carefully.

Follow makaveli8x8's advice and boot the system using a Linux live cd and see if that works. Run the memory check utility on that cd as well, and make sure to let it run for at least an hour. If the RAM doesn't produce any errors in that timeframe, it's safe to assume it isn't the culprit.

Also enable SMART monitoring in the BIOS. Many mainboards still come with the SMART option disabled by default, which is just silly. SMART is a monitoring scheme for hdd's that allows a hdd to report any failures to the software running on the PC (BIOS, OS or application level). If you enable SMART in the BIOS, the system performs a quick check on all the detected hard drives (nothing more than a query being sent to each hdd, which then reports back its status). If any drives report a SMART error during startup, replace those disks and try to recover your data from them.

If that doesn't shed any light on the cause, you might try running a more extensive hdd check. Note that these checks tend to erase any data on the disk, so be prepared for that. Before running a test like that, I'd personally just reinstall Windows (or migrate to Linux while you're at it) and see if a fresh install solves the problem. Make sure to start from a completely erased hard disk: remove all partitions prior to reinstalling and re-create the master boot record. Also start with a single hard drive, and only add an additional hdd once you've installed the new OS and verified that it's stable.

If you're reinstalling, also make sure to remove any other non-core hardware: any sound cards, additional network adapters or peripherals (printers, scanners) that are not essential for the basic functioning of the machine. Only start adding such devices to the machine once the freshly installed OS runs reliably.

Weird shit, this morning I wake up, boot my computer, wont even let me boot on CD. Saysntoskrnl.exe is missing, I reboot, says winlogon.exe is missing, also my built in OS is crashed. I shut down the power, reboot and its back to where I was yesterday.

Also when I ran a scandisk on C and D it said unable to create log 50 or something like that.

What CD did you use to boot from? Doesn't sound like the machine was booting from CD at all, to be honest.

Scandisk sucks; it takes forever, tries to fix (read: fuck up) your file system and when you're done, you're still none the wiser.

Start by disconnecting that second hard drive as I suggested in my previous post, as well as any unnecessary hardware. First simplify the system and thereby isolate the problem.

Windows repair was the cd, I did disconnect the other hardware, it didnt change anything as far as I know. Just saying but my main HD is western digital WD Caviar SE16. Theres a big problem with me reformatting because I have 600gb of files and only an extra 80gb HD with about 30 GB left. I have a pretty big poker hand database which I built over alot of time. I also have quite a few important files which most likely goes over the 30GB left on my other HD.

Boot from a Linux live CD and backup your files.

im pretty sure i had 2 of your hard drives in raid, and they both failed fairly close to each other, scandisk didn't work/tell me shit, but the software on there website straight up told me the disks were bad and if they were still under warrenty, ended up getting 2 brand new hard drives and they even upgraded me to larger cache's 32 instead of 16 and new warrentys as well   So im saying this all again because it makes sense to at least rule hard drive failures out of the mix before spending time on installing a new OS onto it.
