East Texas lawmaker blocks Salvia bill May 25, 2011 - dallasnews.com
A ban on selling the hallucinogenic plant Salvia divinorum hit a roadblock Wednesday in the House.
Rep. Charles "Doc" Anderson, R-Waco, had the bill on the local and consent calendar, a place intended for non-controversial bills. But Rep. David Simpson, R-Longview, stopped it in its tracks by announcing he planned to speak against the bill for 10 minutes to kill it. And away it went.
Anderson expected opposition when he entered the House chamber, saying he knew there were shops that sell Salvia that would try to derail the legislation, Senate Bill 348.
But Simpson said his reasons were parliamentary and religious: He didn't think the bill belonged on local and consent and he didn't want to see the state ban a plant he said was created by God and that is used in some Indian religions.
"Our country was built on religious freedom," he said, adding that he didn't want to one day see his own religion undermined one day because it uses "symbols of the body and blood of Christ."
What Texas really needs when it comes to use of salvia, he said, is for parents to take responsibility for their children.
Anderson, noting that the Salvia ban previously won passage in a House bill on a 147-2 vote, said he will keep looking for another bill to tack the measure onto before the session ends Monday. He said he's open to creating a religious exemption. But he said the only cultures he's aware of that use the plant are in Mexico, and they only chew a leaf of it, not the dangerous extract from the plant.
Anderson compares Salvia to LSD because he says it causes dangerous out-of-body experiences. He has noted that 23 other states and several countries have banned the plant, which he said minors are often pulled into using through peer pressure.
"We're trying to protect these youngsters," Anderson said.

And suddenly I have respect for a lawmaker in Texas. I hadn't had that in about 10 years now, due to the state of the place I even left. It's good to see that not only are there people out there who can think logically, but that they also consider themselves what we'd think of as our "enemy," a Republican. Good to see some people haven't forgotten what the "republic" in that word means.
Kudos, David Simpson. You've earned the respect of heads all around Dallas.

I used to be a liberal till i finally realized, Its typically liberals/democrats that are the biggest ones to strip away rights and freedoms contrary to popular belief. There are many butthole republicans (G W BUSH for one) that have strayed from the core values the party was founded on. Ron Paul talks shit about that all the time. He is a TRUE Conservative Republican

And an atheist, hence why I love the dude.
And yeah, I don't consider the Republican party my enemy at all. They do great things towards making sure we get to keep our money, or at least the ones who "get it" do. Others are all in the pockets of churches and corporations. It's the same on both sides of the camp, it won't be long before party affiliation is pretty much meaningless anyways.

actually, he's closer to a libertarian. fiscally conservative, socially liberal (which makes the most sense).
and Bush was a "neoconservative", their ideology was the antithesis of what conservativism actually respresents. they played the family values/religious card like it was going out of style, while giving tax breaks to their rich buddies on Wall Street, and supporting the outsourcing of jobs blue-collar workers had, overseas; not to mention relaxing environmental regulations of oil refineries, making Houston look as bad as LA. oh joy. all this while getting people waving their chinese-made american flags...you'd have to be either very stupid or asleep to not have seen the illusion.

Hell yes, Longview is where I grew up. I'm actually surprised these words came from a Longview lawmaker's mouth.

I am a republican and even though i disagree with the 2 party bandwagons, i did it cuz its the only way you can vote sometimes
True liberals are for taking Your rights away with the use of big government.
True republicans are for almost absolute freedoms with little government involvement.
Its too bad though that so many republicans follow the dumb ass republicans who are misled. In fact the majority of republican politicians id say are They forgot what they are really suppose to be for. And therefore its now a repub vs demo war.
